"Chester Half Marathon in May Plenty of time before I start training for that But there's the Rhyl 10 mile at the end of Feb which I might have a go at What training plans are everyone following, or do you make it up as you go along? I follow plans that are in the Adidas MiCoach app/ website. They'll tailor your "needs" from novices to club runners, 5km to marathon. They give a good mix of interval, sprint, endurance and recovery runs " I don't normally follow a strict programme for my other races i do, but the marathon is a completely different beast and so you can get found out more if you don't do the training, so I'm following the london marathon advanced programme. After my marathon i want to go back to the shorter races as i find the commitment of training for a marathon too much. | |||

" Agree with you there I just don't have the time to allow 3 to 4 hour training sessions for a full marathon The guys that organise the Chester half do a great job and have pre race training programmes and musters (training runs) running up to race day. I may try to do Hastings half marathon in March as part of my training - it's quite a toughie as it's a very hilly course. | |||

"I did Portsmouth Coastal on December 20th. Totally fell apart. In recent weeks I've done a 39min 5 mile and 1.48 half and was targeting 4.20 (trail event) but was almost an hour slower I'm still giving my body a chance to recover before I start Brighton training in earnest. I was back on my bike on Monday and tomorrow will be the 3rd day of commuting (1hour each way), New Year Park run will be my frst run. Envisage another similar week next week (3 commutes and a couple of short runs) and then have a 10km on the 10th. From then on in I'll knuckle down until April" Sounds like your be quite a way ahead of me in terms of endurance having done the recent marathon. Running in portsmouth can be a bit of a lottery with the wind off the Southsea seafront - i struggled with it at Great South one year. I'm struggling with the faster runs at the moment in my programme as i had to rest in December due to foot injury and lost a lot of my speed. | |||

Portsmouth coastal was blowing a gale, it runs from Southsea to Hayling island and back again, muddy underfoot, windy, intermittent torrential rain. Should have adjusted my target but gambled on a shit or bust approach! And then the niggling IBT band became a lot more than a niggle! Last 10km took me an hour and 40! I'm in a much better place than I was this time last year. Been back commuting regularly, pretty much given up alcohol and girlfriend is also runner (and doing VLM). Fingers crossed the training goes well and I get the 3.45 my half time suggests is a tough ask but a real possibility! | |||

I'm going for 3hrs 15 to 3hrs 20, but i may have to readjust it depending on how the training goes. I giving it my best shot by giving up the alcohol and that should help. | |||
