I've brought the big issue and given money to beggers. What's the price of a coffee? Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a good family, job, home. Yes there will be those that beg that don't need it but unless you watch them all day then your not going to know. Just be grateful it's not you begging and selling the big issue. That's how I see it and I'm thankful for what I've got.

How do you know they are designer clothes?.....do you rifle through her clothing looking for labels?

Also do you know where she gets her clothes?.....plenty of top label clothes to be found in charity shops.

It's all too easy to make assumptions about people based on their clothing.

I agree with Jane here, I've brought designer clothes in charity shops. And unless you rifle through her personal belonging and find reciepts etc your not going to know. Yes there are bad apples out there but there are genuine beggers too who don't have what we have. Have some heart please. What £1 to you is alot to them.

I never give money to beggers.

There was one I used to know back when I lived in Scunthorpe. I knew him, we went to school together.

I used to buy him Mcdonalds, or something hot whenever I saw him, because I knew if I gave him money, he'd spend it on drugs.

When I moved down here, I used to go through the town center early in a morning, and see a couple of guys asleep in doorways, so I'd always buy them coffee in the mornings. Only from Mcdonalds, and for a couple of quid, at least they got warm.

Have to chuckle at all the anecdotal evidence offered up that attempts to prove that Big Issue sellers are in fact wealthy people.....

So now we not only know they wear 'designer' clothes but we know the contents of their daughters bedroom...

Can anyone beat this?.....

That's the way these threads normally go.

I was a paramedic in London for 15 years before moving to the countryside and I knew a few "professional" beggars. It's a misconception that they beg for booze/drug money. They buy that with their benefit money because it was given to them on a regular day and the dealers all came along on those days fully stocked with goodies.

At Christmas, I used to give my "regulars" a packet of 10 fags and a couple of mars bars, but never cash.

My mom used to work for Greggs many moons ago and at the end of the day any left over food got chucked out out the back. but it was all broken up and washing up liquid poured all over it to stop the beggars having it. My mom left after a week, she like me could not understand the smallminded people at time. The food was thrown away anyway but why destroy it,its was no loss to them.

I always thought big issue sellers are regulated and have to be homeless to sell it.

I do give to big issue sellers but I don't take the magazine so they can sell it again. I have given to beggars before now too.

As Burlesque said, not everyone is fortunate enough to have a good family job and home and why I don't mind giving.

I know that some of us could be getting taken for a mug by some, but although I don't give to all beggars etc, I feel better giving than wondering if they managed to get a warm drink that day.

I think sometimes people can be too wary though, there was a young lad in the main shopping centre here stopping people to ask do they have some change so he could make a phone call ( he was right next to the phone box) loads of people said no, he looked distraught, so I gave him some money to use the phone. After he made the call he came back to me and said he had to phone his mum as he had been robbed of his money and Mobile and he had done what his mum had always told him to do if he ever needed help and ask people his parents age or above, but no one had helped for a full 35 minutes. I was still there ( waiting for Mr R to extract himself from the shop he had gone into to buy his latest gadget) when his mum turned up to pick him up.

All I could think of was all those people who walked past him or said no to him could have been parents themselves and wouldn't even think to help someone elses son out, I bet they would have been shouting from the rooftops about the people who wouldn't help if it was their kid doing the asking.

I give via my salary to a few charities close to my heart. I don't give to beggars on the street, I don't buy the Big Issue, because I have no interest in it. I have three children and Santander who have first dibs on my money!

I give my time.. Won't give money to beggars- if I'm eating I offer my food after all if it's for food they will be grateful.. In the bad weather I took 4 of their dogs in because it was too cold to stay out- and the places that accept dogs were full so off I go collect woofs and return them next morning... The charities have my number and if it's too cold they ring me. I saw 4 beggars get out of a car one morning giving their gold to the driver- so will never hand over cash to anyone- too many professiOnal beggars out there!!.

in response to a question up above,,the beggar woman with the ball of fifties,i know she doesnt need the money because she now lives in a 5 bed house around the corner from me,,and her hubby drives a 09 car,we both work, and we drive a 97 car,,,i know thats just one example, but when i split from my ex,years back i lived on the streets for months,i was working, but i got paid daily so couldnt afford to pay rent the whole time,,,so i have seen first hand the scams that can and are pulled

How do you know the beggar woman did not get that house through housing benefit? or the car through disability living allowance? You don't know the facts on that you are merely speculating. My dad as a brand new car though disability as he as MS. You don't the beggars history

How do we know she's not begging anymore?

She probably isn't and is on benefits now so she doesn't have to beg.

People beg cause they have nothing just remember that.

beggars do it for food and somewhere to sleep, not topay insurance and tax on a car,im in ireland, they dont give cars on the benefits,so couldnt be that, and yes i am jealous, for the simple fact that we do everything by the book, and get nothing in return, and they dont yet get everything,,

who wouldnt be jealous

Giving .....doesn`t always mean filthy lucre!!

Sometimes a quick chat and sharing a smile can mean so much to somebodies isolation and loneliness....

Just a thought ....

I have given money or food on occasions but you have to be careful.

I once saw a really tatty beggar touting off tourists. He had filthy ripped clothes and his toes were sticking out of his shoes....his pinkies were as clean as a whistle and his fingernails were clean and short.

The charities or Big Issue are the better option I would say.

Ebenezer: Are there no prisons? And the union workhouses - are they still in operation?

First Collector: They are. I wish I could say they were not.

Ebenezer: Oh, from what you said at first I was afraid that something had happened to stop them in their useful course. I'm very glad to hear it.

First Collector: Now what can I put you down for?

Ebenezer: Nothing!

Second Collector: You wish to be anonymous?

Ebenezer: [firmly, but calmly] I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish sir, that is my answer. I help to support the establishments I have named; those who are badly off must go there.

First Collector: Many can't go there.

Second Collector: And some would rather die.

Ebenezer: Then let them do so and decrease the surplus population.

****

That pretty much sums it up for me too.

i hate tin rattlers.

when i was shopping at christmas in bristol they were everywhere ans standing in the way of people trying to force them to hand over money.

i understand that people are giving up time to collect for some very worth while causes.but some of it borders of harassment and the only charities i give to are ones i have heard of and know something about like the salvation army, help for heroes and rspca.

in response to some of the points raised within this thread some people beg because they have to.........and some beg because its profitable!!

desperate times call for desperate measure.............and some of the population realise this and take their opportunity to make a quick killing.

u dont actually need to be homeless to sell the big issue..........my "friend" makesw at least 40 quid a day selling it on top of his benefits and sadly it is to fund his drug habit. granted that there are many vendors out there who dont and sometimes people just view them all as drug users....which is rather sad

I'm a poor student so I don't because I can't afford it. Though I would much rather give food than cash for the reasons that have been outlined, everyone has a story about a begger who isn't as homeless as they make out but of course there are those in need. So goods not cash.

I once offered a guy who told me he was starving a flapjack which I'd just bought - rather than give him money, he declined because he didn't like them...couldn't of been that hungry!

I've donated and raised money for various other charities, but I'd never give a beggar money.

I think the instant you inform people of what you have done...it ceases to be a charitable act.

We wonder how many previous posters, who class Issue sellers as beggars, have little dears who, around late October, put a Teddy in a Frankenstein mask, dress it in a football shirt and then intimidate and pester aged shoppers into parting with their money.

Now that's begging!

XXXX

PS: Don't even get me started on Halloween........demanding money with menaces!
