Hi All,

we are currently thinking of relocating from surrey to Liverpool as we live in a boring little town that costs the earth just for a 2 bed flat! also seen online lots of good things about liverpool and how the people are really friendly and nightlife is excellent etc.

unfortunately there seems to be just as many sites claiming its not a good place to live with gangs of "scallies" who beat people up for no reason then stab you if you retaliate! and lots of "southerner" racism.e.g.:

Anyway just looking for an honest opinion from people who actually live there about whether it would be a good place to relocate to for a couple in our twenties? how safe it is? and do they have any good swinging clubs!!

I've never lived there bit have a few friends that do..

It's a great place, like anywhere it has a few rougher spots but it's not what it once was...

I can't advise specifically for Liverpool, but like all large cities there will be nice areas and very rough ones. All larger cities have plenty of nightlife and entertainment choices.

I've visited Liverpool and found it friendly and welcoming. No idea if southerners would get a different reaction.

Seeing as you are moving from the south, you should be able to afford a reasonable sized place in a nice area, wherever you decide to move to.

It would be a good idea to spend at least a weekend, ideally longer, in the city to find the areas you like.

If it is the swinging scene you want; Manchester and the surrounding area have lots of clubs.

I'm a scouser and have friends who live here who aren't Scouse and I've never seen any hostility towards them. Like every town it has its rough areas and scallies but us scousers are very friendly people, if you'd like any more information or to discuss whatever of Liverpool you're looking at feel free to DM me and ask and I'll gladly tell you

Why not visit.. Spend a couple of weekends up here.. City centre is just as expensive to rent as London.. Further out u out get cheaper it is.. Some rough areas.. Like any other part of the country.. But on a whole.. Very friendly people. My advice would be wirral.. 10-20 minutes through tunnel for the night life in Liverpool. but not as busy or expensive as city.. Plus wirral is surrounded by the coast do lots of lovely beaches

Any town is going to be expensive ,

Before you move get your name on the council social housing rgister where you live now

Then apply to get transferred to the area your moving into . If your renting anyway what have you got to lose.

Then the next thing , every town has bad areas , and unfortunately big cities with lots of illegal drug use ar usually quite bad for crimes and anti social behavior .

The only thing that you can do is ring the local police freedom of information unit , and ask them if they have published details of crimes per street ,

1 in 2000 people even less are bad neighbors and in bad areas .

But generally if you look at a street ,

No cars in the day, but loads at night is a good signs.

Old furniture in the garden , gardens overgrown, abandoned cars , poor decorative condition , dirty Windows.

In the evening are people really bad behaved ,

you never rally know what your neighbors are like till you move in ..

If you want cheap , your going to get social tenants , and even though the majority are good, it only takes one to make a whole street miserable . At least in working areas , you know people are usually going to be at work, rather than playing music and drinking all day .

avoid these areas if possible when looking for a home, Everton, Anfield, Croxteth, Norris Green, some areas of Walton, Speke, some areas of Toxteth, West Derby and Bootle.

Areas if within your budget, Woolton, Gateacre, Allerton, Old Swan (ish), Aigburth, avoid living in the city, you'll pay a fortune for space you can't fit a couch in.

Like every major city in england, it has its good and bad areas, unfortunately Liverpool is pigeonholed as a shithole and crime ridden city but over the past 20 years its has some major changes and all positive, only negative stories hit the headlines but Liverpool can boast some world firsts too, come and have a long weekend and see what we have to offer. Its more than the Beatles and football these days.

Liverpool is the same as any city in that it has its bad areas, but it also has a fantastic city centre, great night life, loads of good suburbs and is easy for commuting. Also have a look at the Wirral and Chester area as both are short drives from L'Pool.

You also have the fantastic Townhouse (one of the best in the UK) on the other side of the Mersey

Liverpool is a great place I think. Scousers are generally very friendly, happy and relaxed. There are some nice areas too and plenty to do...

However, there are a few very bad areas. You do need to avoid certain areas. Walton, Toxteth and Croxteth are rough as hell. I know a girl who lives in Walton and it's common to have smack heads banging on the door at 1am most nights. It doesn't phase her, but it freaks me out!

Melling and magull are also nice places and Liverpool outside regions are just as nice within a 10-20 min train journey such as the Wirral, St. Helens, Warrington and Preston brook

im a manc and we do give scousers abuse, but if you find the right area(good luck lol)as some said on here wirral is good place and within easy reach of center, do your homework ask people when you visit what are the best places, as for rough areas liverpool not much different from manchester, a area can be ruined by just by a few deadlegs

Its pretty decent tbh. Nice clean city its got ahit areas just like any.

Ive parked my bike everywhere from the city center, posh apartment blocks to council estates its always been fine.

Parked it once in london was stolen by morning.

Each town/ city has it's good and bad points

There are nice areas of Liverpool and awful ones

But it IS a great city

Also have a look on the Wirral too

Plus they have one of the best swinging clubs, The Townhouse, this side of Birmingham

also does the wirral have its own town/nightlife? or is it more of a quite place?

wirral doesn't have much of a nightlife, but does have a great view of liver pools waterfront, there is a rail service that gets you to liverpool, most of the time its reliable but like all rail networks, there are occasionally delays etc

Yes they go both ways but you are limited to a time schedule.

On a smaller scale then Liverpool but unless you are out every night I couldn't see it being a problem.

I moved up from Buckinghamshire a few years ago. It is not all bad but as others have said, choose your area. I ended up on the Wirral. My family live in Liverpool and St Helens and I grew up near the City Centre. No way would I go back to my childhood home today. There are lots of lovely places in and around Merseyside. Just take your time and come up to visit. Estate agents will not tell you which areas are nice or not but driving through them will!

No clubs in Liverpool but the fantastic Townhouse is nearby. Manchester clubs are an hour away too. Good luck!

The wirral is fine. The east side is rough as hell and ugly. The south west is posher. Train to the city centre is regular and cheap.

Wirral does have nightlife but it's shite and dog rough. Its on the east side in a delightful place called birkenhead!!! Right shit hole. Keep south west..

As an ex "Sintelliner" (St Helens) I could say it's a great place to go....easy access to Liverpool. (11 miles centre to centre) but also close to Manchester (under 20 miles) with more of the lifestyle clubs/scene.

Good property prices too!

I visit all football grounds with the Mighty Blues, Anfield and Goodison are the only grounds where its advisable to pay one of the scallys to look after your car, if you dont it'll be stripped in broad daylight.

The area surrounding the grounds have been permit zones for over 5 years, Who have you been paying ? Traffic wardens ?

I lived in Liverpool for several years and it was probably the best place I've ever lived. Like any multicultural city there are areas where you wouldn't choose to live but they account for a very small fraction of the city. Also, Liverpool offers excellent value for money where housing is concerned and there are many large companies based in the area for work opportunities.

I would say if you're thinking about it, go for it!! X

you will tend to get the same answers in a brutally honest answer......

Just like anywhere else, Liverpool has its good and bad parts. I live in South Liverpool and it's generally quite a nice, quiet place with some decent bars and restaurants. The city centre is fantastic for nightlife and the North end is great if you want to be mugged by a dirty scally in dreadful sportswear (joking, mostly)! My advice would be to come up for a weekend and try the place on for size.

You speak of Liverpool people as if they are a breed apart. They're not.

You'd actually be very hard pushed to find people who have been here for generations.

Love Liverpool have worked there and would recommend it with great friendly down to earth people.

Fascinating history and lovely places like the waterfront, Liverpool one, the South around Sefton Park and the North around Formby.

The North West swinging scene rocks as well.

I was told website like zoopla have crime rate stats.

If you opt to go further away from the town centre there are some nice areas, and very attractive house prices.

I found it very friendly when I've been there, though there's obviously the odd butter around.

The city centre has developed a lot and the cultural and nightlife is very good.

One other thing - the gorgeous landscapes of Snowdonia and the Lake District are within pretty easy reach.

I grew up in Liverpool and now work in an around it in a job where I see and deal with all walks of life. Attitudes have changed over the years, most scousers used to think the world ended at the end of the m57 but with the massive student population and many different cultures it has become the norm to be served your beer and food by outsiders. I know and work with people who came to Liverpool as students and settled here because they love it so much. Do your homework tho because like everywhere it has it's rough areas. There are plenty of city centre apartments for sale or rent and the night life is really good. As for swingers clubs, I've never been to one but Townhouse seems to get good reviews.

Lived there for the first 30 years of my life, there is nowhere else in the country I would rather be. The people are friendly and helpful, ok you get a few bad ones but that happens everywhere. The night life is so diverse, there is something for everyone.

I was very fortunate for 10 years to be a live in landlord in Liverpool City centre and during that time rented out 3 the floors to students from all over the UK Europe and the rest of the world.

Every Birthday Christmas etc I get cards regular emails and letters from these students every single one states how much they enjoyed their time in the city and how they recommend to people they meet what a great place it is. Lots of have returned for visits with families and friends.

Also over the years I have worked in the areas that have been stated as to avoid even these areas have good parts and nice people let's not stereotype all the the people in these areas as bad either.

My advice come and visit the area over a period of time.

If you're looking at moving from a swinging point of view id suggest Manchester! Both are great cities with some lovely areas, both have a great vanilla social life! However, Liverpool has one club nearby - the Townhouse (admittedly a great club). Manchester has Amour in the city centre, Cupids in swinton, partners in Bury and Adam and Eve's in Eccles. (Apologies if I've forgotten any) there are also clubs in Bolton and Chorley - both within half an hour of Manchester!

The whole north west has a thriving swinging scene though with a huge number of clubs considering the population size. We're obviously dirty buggers!

No idea about the swinging part, but my 26 year old brother and his gf relocated to Liverpool a couple of years ago and love it. That was from Newcastle so maybe less of a culture shock, but I think it's a great city. Like everywhere there will be good areas and bad, but there were plenty of good.

I moved here in 2001 and I have seen a huge change since then, massive investment has seen the rough areas become fewer and the better areas more affluent.

The city has lots of work and is a great place to live.

Being a port it has had 100's of years of immigration, therefore, in general scousers are naturally welcoming and providing you are not a total arse you will make lots of new friends.

My advice is to take the plunge, I did and never regretted it

It's a load of crap, you get good and bad in every city. I've lived here 33 years, I have never been randomly beaten up and stabbed by a gang of scallies.

Look on right move at property prices, you can buy local housing association housing in my town for buttons (4 bed house less then £50k)

If you have children, you will want to look at schools, the education in Liverpool is dreadful, but there are a few top notch schools, the houses around them areas are expensive (suppose that depends on what you can get in your area for the same price)

If you don't mind being in a quieter better area just outside, look at places like formby, southport, ormskirk or Sefton area, not Liverpool area, steer clear of places like bootle, Waterloo, seaforth, Crosby. Bootle an seaforth are probably a good buy as the area's are getting better, Waterloo and Crosby are the well to do area's snobby scally areas.

Why tell them to avoid them areas? I've lived in a couple of the those places you don't suggest and there's nothing wrong with them.

Liverpool is a great place to live, and the majority of people are lovely and friendly.

Of course there are certain places I wouldn't live, but generally I wouldn't put people off it at all.

Again, I've lived in Walton and this is not the norm!!

I have friends that live in croxteth and absolutely nothing happens there either.

Obviously you get your scals and smack heads, but tell me a city that doesn't???
