Have you also noticed on sales on sofas, that they make ridicules price cuts from the original price, for example, is sais it was 700 but now 250?

They wouldn't make any profit that way and as well, dominic littlewood did a program on it and it turned out that most shops couldn't give evidence that it infact was 700 to start with, whats your view and is it really legal what they do?

It's not just sofas Shag, you'd be hard pressed to find anything ever for sale at its original price in places like JD Sports as well.

They have to advertise sale products at the higher prices for a certain amount of time before they cut the price. So,in November they put up the prices of the things they want to get rid of and then put them on sale after Christmas. It's legal as far as I'm aware.

Good idea and yes they could do it in that way too.

London and France

As long as the item has been on sale in their shop for a certain period ( I think a month) at the so- called " real price" then it's legal.

( for the big companies " their shop" means any of their shops in UK)

So the big companies with lots of outlets, for instance price one sofa at £1000 in some remote shop , another at a huge price somewhere else, and so on, then they can " reduce the price" in all their shops for the rest of the year. They are still making a markup of between 10 and 25% on sales goods .

The never ending DFS sale is made possible by sofas and the like having 16 (I think) differences to the previous model.

We wanted one sofa that was taken off sale and it was double the price, asked why cant it be the sale price still. The above was the answer.

I compared the two and could find about 10 differences.

Same sofas with different cushions or stitching or feet etc. Bit of a laugh really when you think about it

A lot of retailers don't comply with legislation here. Even our supermarkets are guilty. Often the product size not on offer may be better value too.

With government cuts we can expect enforcement to get worse.

ive worked in a furniture store some years ago, it's a pretty good con to be fair i can remember putting sale notices on suites with the new price being £100 to £200 dearer than when it wasnt in the sale and people coming in and buying them!!!

the only times i can recall any being marked up at the genuine rrp was if it was a new line and a new design.

Well, I can report that I sent Mrs ddc to investigate the small-print on the back of their Sale signs.....

(But if I'm honest, I may have been a tad distracted...)
