Yellow fish in that pukey milky water forced down us at school... I quite liked school dinners but when you were on second sitting and the first sitting came out of the dining hall muttering 'its yella fish!' as we queued to go in, my heart used to sink.....

I hated eggs as a kid, couldn't stand them, boiled, fried, poached, scrambled, fertilised... YUK.

That all changed when my first wife fell pregnant and I developed a craving for them whilst she couldn't have them - and she loved eggs!

I still enjoy them now.

Edinburgh

Mushrooms and onions - like the flavour, can't stand the texture!

Liver - bleurgh!

Squid/oysters/crab (anything even vaguely similar in texture) - vomit

There's more... I'll come back when I've remembered them!

Frozen/garden peas. Sweetcorn (not on cob).

Tapioca, semolina and apples were always hard. I loved school dinners and the following is a true sory. Always lined up again for seconds or more if any left. But on one particular day the headmaster was in a mood, picked on me and wouldnt allow me to have my second dinner. He told me to put my plate back and get outside. I shouted at him, "f**k off you baldy b*s*a*d!" Threw my plate at his head causing a bruise and ran towards home (1mile) screaming my head off with tears running off my chin. A teacher caught up with me half way there, brought me back to school and the headmaster called my parents. When they came to the school my mother wnet mad at me but my dad went mad at the headmaster for not allowing me to get fed for no reason (its not as if i had done anything wrong, plus i was a fit healthy lad and enjoyed my sports - he just picked on me). They had to be seperated as they almost came to blows. On way home my dad said to me "well done son!"

Next day when walking past headmaster i tapped my stomach and said haha. When i got to canteen - ah ffs. Garden peas or loose sweetcorn withdinner and tapioca for dessert. Ah well. Headmaster has never spoken to me since. He just turns pale. Im proud of what i done as it serves him right for the beltings and ruler slapping he used to give me and other pupils. Shame i didnt injure him though.

canterbury

Maybe no-one else remembers this but school dinners in the 60's, certainly in London, frequently featured mixed diced vegetables that seemed to have little hairs sticking out of them. I haven't thought about this for 40 years or more and I suppose the 'hairs' were just fibrous elements of the veg but whatever they were they were extremely unappealing. And in those days they made you sit there until you'd eaten it all and it just got less appetising as it got colder. God it makes me shudder to think of it even now!
