Sometimes U.K

Enjoying a thread about a particular topic, why do some comment when it's unrelated to the subject?

Why not start their own thread about the 'off topic' subject?

Yes, I know I've probably opened mysrlf up for many off topic replies now...

It's no different then real life, When a group of people get together and start talking about a particular topic and then one person says a comment that sends people off on a tangent

Unless it's evidence being given in court or the reading of a film script , i've never been part of a conversation where people could only comment on the last comment and not mention something that the conversation brings to mind or ask a question of one of the contributors.

I never understand the people who cry that a thread has been ruined. Just because they can't see how a contribution links to a thread doesn't mean it doesn't fit.

So, staying on topic; do you too use a bed of onions and carrots for the leg of lamb or do you use something else? Parsnips?

Personally I could never go off topics, I love them, even though I swear there are fewer hazelnuts than when I was a kid.

(Bearing in mind I've quoted a comment, does this count as staying on topic or digressing? )

I think a reply or two off topic is ok, so long as it doesn't take over the entire thread with a lengthy conversation that has nothing to do with the topic at all that kills off the thread and becomes some kind of private chatroom instead.

In seriousness, it's like lots of conversations, they ebb and flow as more people join the discussion.

It's quite natural.
