Emotional - or technical help - rather desperate needed. :(

Alright. So my mum got me a really nice new tablet for Christmas - nothing too expensive, only around 50 quid, which doesn't sound that much but it is really - but when I came up to bed, I accidentally put a box of crayons down on top of it quite hard, then picked up the tablet to use it. It was then I noticed a crack about three quarters down the screen, and now in the other two thirds it's not responding at all. I can't afford to have it repaired or replaced, nor can my mum.

I've just been sat crying my eyes out for the past 20 minutes about it, really angry at myself for it, like I don't deserve nice things if that's how I treat them and I think my mum will understand but I still feel so bad about it as money is tight. I think I just need moral support or something.

If it has not been turned on, some people would take it back to the shop and exchange it for one that doesn't have a cracked screen. I am not suggesting you do something dishonest, but some people might try to tell the shop it was like that ????

Sadly there is nothing anyone can do practically...As said before...not under warranty, and from the sound of it not fixable other than with a new one.

Sorry for what happened, but just an accident and not really your fault from the sound of it.

I'm sure your mum will understand and hopefully, although money is tight, you can replace it fairly soon...x

I wouldn't worry about it to much tablets phones the van be fragile.

I had and iPhone o threw when I was pissed off and it was fine dropped it few months later about 30cm from th carpet and the screen cracked. So I would say don't worry.

Warranty won't cover it imo as ot would not be q manufacturerimg defect unless proven. But most tables can be replaced at a reasonably priced depending where you taken them so I would just wait until yoy can afford it.

No, I've had it on all day, I've already downloaded apps that wouldn't have already been on the phone.

Either way I'm not even sure that'd work as I think she bought it off Ebay or Amazon as new.

Unless it's covered by insurance taken out at the time, or household insurance I think you might have damaged it and I can't imagine repairing the screen will be cheap.

Sure your mum will understand it was an accident. What a shame.

If i was you i would take it back and say when you opened it the crack was already there its no skin off there nose as they will send it back to the mfr and get it replaced for peanuts. I dare say it happens all the time that is the best solution for your problem i would say. Good luck Dave

Last boxing day I accidentally smashed the screen on my tablet. Still haven't got it fixed as everywhere quotes £180 so not sure what you can do.

Can you not save up over a period of time and replace it

Did your mum buy it using a credit card? I'm not sure of the details but I think purchases are covered against accidental damage.

Sadly not the case. I know from personal experience that Argos won't exchange it once it has been turned on. Even if you haven't used it, downloaded it or anything. I would guess other suppliers have similar rules.

If its an android one you should be able to hard reset it without needing to use the screen.

Depsning on what model it normally involves the power button and the volume one.

Hope you get it sorted x

. I would think most manufactures are wise to this type of activity and are not easily fooled , and in addition ignoring the fact it is dishonest to make a false statement .

The best bet for getting it repaired might to take it to an independent repairer or be honest with the manufacturer or retailer and see if they can be persuaded to do the repair as a goodwill jesture .

The most important thing is to fix your well being. And to feel better about yourself right now.

Your mum loves you and you appreciate how much she gave you. Perfect.

As for the tablet - most retailers seem a little more generous post Christmas, so there may be a branch or member of staff who will remedy the situation.

Hope you're feeling better op. The gadget was probably not fit for purpose, a key part of the sale of goods act.

Putting a box of crayons on a tablet should not break the screen. Sounds like it may have already been damaged - mine take a lot more crap than that. Phone the shop and talk to them. A friend got a go pro replaced a week after buying it because the USB port got damaged when she dropped it with a cable it.

. Excellent post. Deceit is a very unattractive feature . If those advocating deceit are prepared to blatantly lie over a small issue such as this , it makes you wonder what else they will over.

Why should those who are honest be expected to subsidise those who are dishonest?.

My first call would be try return it and see if it's covered.

If not then it's hard lines, get it on eBay as spares or repair and put the money towards a new one.

If it was mail order I'd lodge a claim for repair or replacement - they'll likely replace it.

It still doesn't sound good enough for the sale of goods act, if next to no weight broke the screen. I'd probably say I'd touched the screen and it broke - just not mention I'd touched it with crayons. Though crayon weight shouldn't break it Imo.

Do a factory reset on it (very easy to do), which will hide the fact that you've had a little use from it. Should be covered under wrranty anyway as there could easily have been a slight chip on the very edge of the screen that you couldn't have seen under the screens framework that shot through when it happened. Just do that and send it back - i'm sure it'll be replaced with no bother. Good luck. X
