Sat in a car park having lunch watching people reverse parking, I was astonished how many people just relied on their wing mirrors, not once did they look over their shoulder out the back window......How many of you are guilty of this?

Frequently. Mainly because I am normally in a large truck that has no window to look out of behind me!

most women struggle to gage distance whilst reversing it's due to being lied to by men about what constitutes 8 inches especially on here !

Did you know if you reverse into spaces you will save fuel. A cold engine uses more fuel when starting in reverse than in first gear.

. As this is an instant fail in a driving test, no . I always look over my shoulders both ways and constantly check.

Some car drivers seem to think that they are driving a lorry where you are unable to look over your shoulder .

I dont tend to use the rear mirror, the rear window is too small and heavily tinted. However I do look round.

I did an advanced driving course for minibuses. Was taught to reverse on mirrors only....including the old reverse round a corner bit.....it's the correct way (apparently)....but to be fair I would only ever reverse after checking by turning round and looking first!

I've got a mk9 civic with 100% tints on the back windows, that ridiculous spoiler/lights combo they put on it makes reversing a bit of an issue.

When it's dark I can pretty much see nothing out of the back.

It always astounds me just how careless and carefree pedestrians are in car parks.

Never a thought given to the fact that someone might be reversing out.

The amount of people that will walk behind a car - or indeed in front of one - when they can clearly see it is manouevering is quite staggering.

This is even more so if it is raining - getting inside as dry as possible is, of course, way more important than basic pedestrian safety.

The guy down the road from us used to delight in zooming behind us in his wheelchair as we reversed out of our drive .

While we're on the subject why oh why do pedestrians assume that you can see them and their dog in the dark and rain when they're dressed head to toe in black?

Even in a lorry you should be looking over your right shoulder and down as well as using your mirrors and where possible have a banks man guiding you in . In a car you have three mirrors to use plus the option of looking over your shoulder

An unskilled driver could use all mirrors, stop the car - get out to look, check positioning etc several times - maybe draw a plan and use a laser measurement system - before completing their reverse parking. A skilled driver will just do it.

Mr N is what I call an intuitive driver the car is like an extension of his body and he has excellent spatial awareness he can reverse quickly and easily into the tightest of spots (stop making up your own jokes at the back) using mirrors and looking over his shoulder. I wouldn't attempt some of the manoeuvres he does but I use all three mirrors, looking over my shoulder and try to find spaces the size of Luxembourg

. I was in a Tesco car park to night and noticed a gentleman just stick his car in reverse without making any effort to look over his shoulder . To make matters worse he just stopped in the middle of the road and it would be difficult to p_edict what he was going to do. He might have stopped just to drive forwards into a space .

"Watxhed an idiot reverse out of a space almost took out a guy and a baby in a pram idiot"

Who was the idiot ? The driver or the guy with the pram ??

In my experience of driving which is the thick end of 30years, I find that not all pedestrians are paragons of virtue either ... particularly the woman with the pushchair who pushes it out into the road to 'test the traffic' before she walks out - likewise the pedestrian/pram/pushchair combo who walk around in supermarket carparks without a care in the world, walking behind cars who are already midway through reversing and displaying reversing lights. I'm not saying it is always the pedestrians fault - fault exists on both sides .......
