It's actually a good list this year, all worthy in their own ways, but as its a public vote I expect the more high profile sports will win so either Andy Murray or Lewis Hamilton.

I'm rooting for Tyson Fury.

I don't agree with his views but I dislike the way that others have tried to bully him out of the arena.

He is religious and entitled to his views whether we like them or not.

A win for him would be a poke in the eye for all the people who say 'you can't say that'.

But in many cases, as a role model and a personality, he shouldn't be able to say the things he does - at least not in public.

I'm not PC by a long way, but his comments are not helpful and not used for good.

The titles he holds come with responsibilities beyond winning and making money.

He needs to respect them.

'Clean up' his act and I'd consider him worthy of this title.

Until then, forget it. For me at least.

He may still win though. There are plenty who agree with him and there are plenty who don't see how damaging his position can be.

I am saying that he needs to think about what he is saying.

His position as World Champion comes with responsibilities - one of which, to me, is that he should keep his private opinions just that, private.

His position could be used for good and not to divide or demean.

I'd agree with BUSSY... I'm not really one for the PC stuff but when you're in the public eye and a role model for kids there's a certain amount of responsibility that comes with it.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, it's just that not everyone needs to hear them.

This thread is about Sports Personality of the year, not about Tyson Fury. Let's leave it that way.

I have expressed my opinions as to why there are more worthy candidates. You seem to disagree.

Tyson Fury has a religious background. You appear to be saying that traditional views should be silenced.

Muhammed Ali won it despite saying that all Jews should be killed. There was no outcry.

So why should a traditional Christian be considered 'unacceptable'?

There has been an organised campaign to get him banned - although I accept that you were not part of it.

Freedom of speech is vital. As soon as we accept that people can silence others well...we are all vulnerable.

It happens a lot. Tyson Fury is just the latest person to be targeted. He has his rights, whether we agree with his views or not.

Furey should have won that hands down!

But the not so 'on to it' agreed with Murray whom won with a team (which already won the team award) but won

nothing in his own very individualistic sport!

Yet Furey took the World title off one of the WORLD dominating brothers of heavyweight boxing of the last decade & more!

Andy Murray actually won the tournament before Wimbledon Queens I think it is so he actually did win something. Fury would've lost votes on the fact he couldn't keep his mouth shut. Not exactly the best role model or ambassador for his sport unlike Murray.

I couldn't because it has no cricket rights, and in its wisdom the BBC decided that the world's number one batsmen who played a major part in winning the Ashes and who also has personality in buckets wasn't worthy of being on the shortlist.

Murray deservedly won sports personality of the year in the year he won Wimbledon. I don't think he's done enough to get the title again but it's a public vote so it is what it is. I'd have like to see Greg Rutherford win it, some achievement holding all the titles and now in the same group as Linford Christie, Jonathan Edwards and Daily Thompson. yeah I voted for him too, especially with all the negative press that rattled him pre championships too. I feel it'll take another double next year and a world record which I don't think he can achieve as he's a tactician and sprint finisher not an endurance at high pace runner

I live in the same town as Tyson fury. Yes he comes from a travelling background. All he has done all his life is boxing. Never been in trouble with the law. Maybe a parking ticket. But has done a lot of work for charitys and local hospice. His dream was to become world heavyweight champion. This does not come easy. He has put 25 years hard work in to be the world title holder. He is a bit mental but look at other characters in the sport. Nasseme Muhammad, Eubanks and Benn, Mohammed Ali. The sport needs guys like this to keep it alive.

he has now done the long distance "double" (5 and 10k) in the last 3 global championships (2012 olympics, 2013 worlds and 2015 worlds) and he never been in the top 3 voting in any of those years.....

you wonder what else he now needs to do...."

just wait, Rio is only 6 months away!

But Furey just broke up what was probably the most boring heavyweight boxing dynasty in history!!

He'd have the world boxing vote for sure!

"I voted for Mo and think the fact he's the best in the world over 2 distances makes him more ideal than Murray who isn't even the best in his sport nevermind not winning a grand slam this year and also losing every time he faced the world number 3 too.

I just don't understand who voted for him and their reasons can someone enlighten me

Most voters are white middle class middle Englanders. Go figure! Mo is one of the finest athletes to represent this country and his achievements are up their with the likes of Coe and Ovett. But maybe his face just doesn't fit??"

.

That's some accusation of racism!

Daley Thompson won it.

Lewis Hamilton

Fatima Whitbread

Ryan giggs

Linford Christie

Lennox Lewis....

There's been dozens of different ethnic winners.

I think it's more likely that people have lost any hope that athletics is anything but clean!

Got to be biggest joke ever - Andy Murray winning a personality of the year competition ? He has as much personality as a cardboard cut-out - BBC fix - again

is giggsy claiming to be a member of the "brotherhood"....

Giggsy is from Salford and his dad played rugby league there.

Fatima is Turkish or Cypriot if I remember correctly and giggs dad is black!.

I think Fatima would be defo on my list for the crocodile Dundee test though!.

In all seriousness though since Armstrong and the whole athletics doping scandal/seb coe debacle...

I've just got that doubt now, there all cheating!
