If you buy a loved one a hotel stay or theatre tickets is that not a suitable gift because you know they are likely to ask you so it's almost like buying it for yourself?

I would not expect to go,she would take her friend or daughter,have fun,come back happy.

(but not use it for a meet!!!!!!)

I don't think so. The person could always ask someone else. Plus, sometimes, the time together is a present in itself. And you've paid for it, so it's all good as I see it.
