Why do pedestrians stop and let me go if they see me pulling out of a space forwards but keep on walking across the back of my car if they see me reversing out of a space

I can't bloody see them as easily if im reversing

And no I hav'nt run anyone over today

Years ago I was reversing out of a space in Tesco's car park. I was flicking my attention between my rearview mirror, my wing mirrors and the rear window on the passenger side as that was where I'd expect any vehicle looking for a space to come from.

All of a sudden there was a hammering on my side window and a furious guy yelling at me. I got out of the car and he was joined by his missus, also yelling furiously.

My 'crime'?

I had nearly run over his 5y/o son who had crossed behind my car as I started to move out. They were coming from the store back to their car and the padestrian walkway was directly in front of me, which they should have been using.

To say I let him have it with both barrels would be an understatement but I left him under no illusions that if he hammered on my car again, frightening the life out of my daughter who was 6 at the time, he'd be drinking his food through a straw for a couple of weeks. Twat.

This is it though Wishy if you have been driving forwards you can bet your life that he would have grabbed his child and stopped him from crossing in front of you but when you're reversing they just keep coming

I really don't get it

If you are arriving they know your going to get out so avoid upsetting you. If your leaving there is less chance so they dont give a fuck.

When your going forward you can both see each other clearly and both know you've seen each other, so the onus is on the pedestrian to let you pull out.

Otherwise, if you hit them, you could always say they stepped out in front of you.

However, when your reversing your vision is limited but theirs isn't.

Therefore, you have to rely on them being sensible and letting you out or stupid and letting you hit them.

If you do its your fault for driving without due care and attention, even though they should have been more alert.

This is the reason why 99% of the time I will reverse into spaces so I can drive out.
