Your Christmas Tree

How do you decorate it?

Is it just randomness? Does it have a color scheme? Do you put white lights and colored lights, or just one or the other?

I'm in a Christmassy mood and I want another Christmassy thread

Back in the US we used to get a huge real tree and we would have all sorts of lights and bulbs, all different colors, etc. But here we just get a little tree because there isn't much room for anything else and we only have white lights and red/green/gold/silver bulbs.

Oh, that's cute, having two trees. I wish I had ornaments that people made me instead of ones I got in a charity shop. Sounds lovely.

Mine is white with fibre optic lights- can't have real because of the cats. Decs are red green gold and silver/white.

Daughter has a bright pink mini one (2ft) in her room with silver/pink decs and a "Frozen" star!

We used to have a random but gorgeous one. When I left and moved here on my own I bought a cheap one as a stopgap that year.

I've still using it as it looks ok. I use red mainly but I am starting to add some random ones. I got some tartan decs from my Scottish friend last year and they go perfectly

White lights on the tree because I have coloured fairy lights around the house all year

I do mine like this,

Glass of wine.

Mince pie.

Christmas music on.

Tree up.

Lights on.

Decorations on.

Angel on.

Finish bottle of wine.

My sister used to be very particular with her tree. I once went over to help her get ready for Christmas. I spent hours and hours on the tree. She had a specific color scheme and the ornaments all had to be of a certain type.

Then she wanted me to put ribbon on it...like in one of those design magazine. She was so angry that the ribbons weren't evenly spaced.

It didn't quite feel like Christmas to me

Warm white lights and a pile of silver/mirror homemade decs. No tinsel.

Haven't bought a tree yet though.

Every year I seem to forget to put away a decoration and I've made it into a bit of tradition. I have a little felt penguin hanging on the door handle of the boiler cupboard that a friend gave me last year. The year before I bought this cute little silver stag that was too pretty to stay in a box. I have a painted bird on my mantelpiece and now there's a dinky little snow globe.

7ft, real tree, and it's actually quite tasteful this year. Red, white and silver baubles (a nicer combo than it sounds), bright white lights and a star on the top. I don't really do tinsel.

I have 2 trees (I know, get me...) both artificial, I'd never get a real one I don't think. 1 in the living room is 7ft tall and camper than a very camp thing. Pink and purple lights and 2 light garlands from cable&cotton plus pink and purple baubles. The tree in the kitchen I love, it's basically half a tree and screws up on the wall. It has white lights, pine and holly garlands, candied fruit decorations, flowers and berries. There's not a branch on it that doesn't have at least 2 things on it, it's packed.

We have a real tree this year, my first ever it's decorated with white and multi coloured lights, multi coloured tinsel and just three lonely baubles. The star for the top is on the shelf as it won't stay put, it keeps falling off.

We decided when we moved in together that we would buy one special, handmade decoration for the tree each year. Build a collection of special memories as we build our collection of baubles. For our first year we couldn't decide which one to buy so we got all three, we're planning to go to the Christmas market in Birmingham next weekend and will buy this year's bauble while we're there

Got an artificial green tree with frosted look to it, 6ft tall, multi coloured lights on it, small baubles at the top, gradually getting to biggest ones at the bottom. Some crackers thrown in there too. Used to put tinsel on years ago but don't do that anymore.

I have two trees, one in lounge is an abundance of colour, coloured lights with classic glass ornaments as well as quirky little ones, sparkly shoe ornaments, fairies, sleighs, wooden ornaments, ones that the kids made etc with coloured lights.

The one in the dining room is a black tree with red and silver ornaments and clear lights.

Fussy bugger!!!!!

It's 7ft Nordic pine with 1000 white lights and silver black and aqua blue baubles. It has no tinsel hate the stuff but does have those bead chains in silver and a nice star on top.

I'm anal with my tree, lights go off and curtains closed so I get lights in the right place.

I think I need tree help lol lol

I've got a fibre optic tree, so no Hassal with lights and the baubles have been collected over the years, some were my grandmothers and aunts, some were made by the boys when they were young - each bauble has a story and means something.

Haven't got mine yet usually it's a free for all bauble fest and white lights but this year I've decided I want to do either an all silver / white or all red tree, always real and always way too big for the room

I cannot cope with colour coded trees. Mine is gaudy and tacky, with all colours on it.

Just gutted I had to have a small one which is stuck on my wall unit.

Did not trust my German Shepherd to not 'kill it' or become attached that he has to drag it everywhere he goes (he does have unhealthy attachments with all manner of things from my dustpan brush to cardboard boxes)

My 7ft artificial green tree is ancient but still good and I love it. I've collected ornaments over 35 years and its an eclectic yet traditional mix. Lots of tartan, homemade baubles, wee Scotty dogs, angels, reindeer, stars, you name it. Some from my childhood that mean a lot. Special photos of nearest and dearest in little frames too...past and present. My son always says you know if you're in favour if you're near the top of the tree! But that's not true I'm random! Bought my grandson his first little personalised bauble this year and plan to do it every Christmas. Hope they one day adorn his own tree.

We have 2 trees. Both artificial. The living room one is 8ft, multicoloured lights, with lots of homemade decs, or from places we have visited. No two are the same. The one in the kids playroom is basically covered in tinsel. I hate tinsel so it's a compromise. I love Christmas, I'm so excited now

I remember when I was a kid we used to just have a random approach to decorating. Multi-coloured lights and random baubles. A total bodge in hindsight but it was the eighties

I prefer the more modern, simple approach. Everything all colour co-ordinated It looks better I think.

Oh, I much prefer the tree we had when I was a kid - tons of lights of every description, ornaments from all over the place, tinsel, beads, candy canes, the works!

Oh god yes. I don't think we had two baubles that were the same either. All different shapes as well. Plus we had a big spike looking thing that went on the top of the tree instead of the now commonplace star or fairy!

First year ever we aren't having a tree. We have got rescue kittens and would be rescuing them from under a collapsed tree tangled in lights within hours. Above the fireplace is a Stags head, well out of reach, we have some arty natural looking baubles and wooden hearts. We got lights up at the windows too.

I'm quite anal about mine. White lights only and it has to be red and silver tinsel with red and silver baubles. All the baubles have to be evenly spaced with the largest at the bottom and smallest at the top and I can't have 2 red ones close to each other without a silver one in between. Candy canes have to face the same way too. Think I might have a touch of ocd now I think about it

My theme is red, green and gold but I also have baubles that I've made (pottery cafes are brilliant) or have been made for me or bought in special places or that Santa brought in my stocking.

As for the tinsel debate I like it. Mines gold and goes on after the lights and before the baubles. I'd have lametta too but the cat would only eat it and it would end up sticking out of his bum when he can't digest it and he gets mardy if I have to chase him and (ahem) deal with it! He had a toy with strands of tinsel on once and it was a nightmare!

We have a real tree, looks like a tinsel monster threw up on it, we go for the fun look which I think we've managed quite well. One year we did try a colour scheme and coordinate the decorations, everyone hated it, so never again.

Not so much a globe , but we do have an upside down umbrella that you fill with false snow, it has 3 snowmen and two xmas trees inside it and an old fashioned lamp post in the centre and the lamp post snows from the top down over the snowmen and trees

Mine this year is silver willow sticks with white lights and all year round hanging things on it

Mine is random, but that's because all the ornaments are random rather than a uniform colour scheme.

But they tell a story because many of them were given to me over the years or collected from all over the world on my travels. So at the end of every year, dressing the tree is a journey of memories.
