Would you say you are an open minded person, willing to listen to others who have, say, more personal experience in something or is your mind already made up and nothing will change it, even if you've made up your mind about something before you've even experienced it?

Depends on the subject.

Sometimes others are worth listening too.

Definitely open minded here u never take things for granted, always have to try things once, and always like to listen to other viewpoints, sometimes they change my mindset, sometimes they don't.

I don't think I'm quite so clear cut! Probably 2/3rds open. Whilst I like to think I always listen....I often have at least made some assumptions already. But I'm big enough to admit I have got it wrong.

I think though I'm far less open about forming opinions about people - and I think I'm nearly always right too!

Open-minded.

I am happy to be temporarily resolute in my opinions but am ooen-minded enough to declare that experience/evidence/evolving may change that opinion at sometime in the future.

I'm open minded, will listen to there views. But if someone gets uppitidy because I ask a question on something I don't understand or they start going off and talking what I consider bollocks on something then it will turn me completly the other way and even if some of what they say is right I will already be completly turned off, I call it doing their cause more harm than good

I like to think of myself as being open-minded and listen to others' perspectives, even if they are difficult or uncomfortable to hear at the time. I like to think I learn from them as well. I try not to form fixed opinions about anything I haven't experienced, I may have a view based on assumptions and/or related experiences but try to remain open to learning. However some views I consider ill-informed or partial and depending on the situation I will share my different perspective with differing degrees of assertion. Alternatively I just let them continue to be ill-informed, because it isn't worth the effort of attempting to change that. On here I have learned to do the latter. I like to think I am very willing to admit when I'm wrong....eventually

I think open mindedness is like intelligence it's only really any use if you're aware of your limits in that respect and are prepared to challenge them.

I think there is a subtle difference between discussing a matter / topic with someone who has personal experience of the subject as opposed to them having just another opinion.

Overall I'm pretty open minded, it's a another way of learning even if I don't agree.

I'm always happy to change my mind with evidence but usually those claiming to be "open minded" are ignoring all evidence and instead asking us all to belive their word alone.

Firstly, this is one of the best open questions that I've ever read!

I generally find that emotions can spur false perceptions.

I think context is key here.

If I consider advice to be thrust upon me, or the opinion is from someone that I consider to be "stuck in their way", I follow my heart.

If I respect the person for who they are, and the subject relates, I listen, ears wide open.

For example, if Brian May told me how to play a guitar, I'd listen, furiously.

If he told me how to style my hair, I'd say "Oi May, Noooooo! I appreciate and aspire to your musical talent, however, I do not relate to your bouffant prowess, kindly stop advising me on this subject IMMEDIATELY!"

Central

I've not read the comments and assume no one has stated they have a closed mind - could be a bit of a killer for them.

I'm much more in the open minded aspect of the continuum. I have some strong opinions on things but have also changed my opinions, based on what I've learned from others. In person I am a good listener and in the forums I usually am too.

It's a tough one sometimes where, for example, published evidence indicates very strongly that a certain position is more likely to be true and someone is arguing the opposite. I'll certainly be intrigued as to what it is that I may not be understanding of, that someone else may have grasped.

And I definitely accept that others who are experienced may very well understand things in a way that I won't have had the chance to. It seems foolish for me to ignore the value of others' experience and potentially even any person's insight.
