how its changed cassette players... huge tvs... huge mobile phones ..... old typewriters .. record players etc the kids don't even know what they are

I read something that once talked about how all of the icons on our very modern devices are based on old items that will cease to make sense to later generations (e-mail symbol is a mailed letter; call symbol is an old phone; etc., etc.).

It was a very interesting idea that while these symbols make perfect sense to us, they soon won't to whole groups of people.

I love books. More than the next guy.

Was having a debate with friends and a certain passage of the Bible was at stake. I would normally go upstairs to the myths & legends section and fished out my illustrated Bible to find the correct section.

Instead I turned to the laptop and Googled it.

And in that instant I realised that my library that I have cherished and nurtured for decades was utterly redundant.

Progress.

You can't stop it.

When I was in my last year in primary school a boy in my class brought in a polystyrene tile and a cassette tape both things were unbelievably ground breaking...then.

I remember the first time our daughter saw one of our LPs and my dad ruefully remarked that the commonplace items of his childhood are in the local museum.

Science does wonderful things for everyone but never intends it!

However I'm one of the people who've hung on to vinyl LP,s

I just love the feeling of putting the needle down and getting that initial hiss

I've got an epidiascope under the stairs. The missus keeps telling me to chuck it out as it's too big and useless but it's such an odd thing I hold on to it.

A lot of modern stuff has built in obsolescence, so that they pre-engineer our future purchases and money.

Maybe keys for locks will disappear soon, so we use the wireless version, or permitted entrants have eyes scanned or use other biometrics - it's available now but still in its infancy. If we replaced our doors and locks more frequently then it could get pushed.

you only need a candle to read your books but keep quiet about them because when they turn off the internet and the thought police come knocking...
