Smoke Alarms

Just a reminder to everyone to check your smoke alarms. We suffered a kitchen fire earlier tonight - lost possessions and there's smoke damage throughout the house but everyone is ok. To my shame the smoke alarms weren't working so it could have been MUCH worse. Possessions can be replaced - family can't.

The Fire Service replaced our smoke alarms so we can now sleep a lot more soundly.

They only do that if you qualify in Wiltshire. If you have young children they do...i know that much. It's a fantastic service

Hertfordshire fire service and lancs too ( maybe others) will check and fit new alarms for you free...and you occasionally get a man in uniform round to see what you need.

So glad you're ok xxx I have a reminder on my phone to check my alarms as the fire service told me to do this when they fitted them. They also changed one recently that had stopped working xx

Brighton - even Hove!

Sorry to hear you had a fire. Glad you were both ok. It takes seconds to check a fire alarm and you can get them cheap too. Get some fitted!

So glad you and your family are safe.

Fire in the home is a real wake up call if you get away with it.

We had a chimney fire earlier this year resulting in me lining the chimney within days.

Great post OP.

Be safe fabbers xx

Would be good if peeps could check their elderly neighbours alarms too, as many can't manage it or plain forget.

It was the dishwasher. It was put on before everyone went to bed so thank goodness the fire started before we did or it could have been a very different story this morning. My daughter, son-in-law and their 1 year old son lives here too - everyone was checked out for smoke inhalation but luckily had all got out before any lung damage was done.

The kitchen looks terrible after being on fire and subsequently doused with foam and there's a fine layer of black, greasy soot on every surface in the house but that's nothing compared to what the outcome COULD have been. I was embarrassed at the state of the smoke alarms but the great guys of Hampshire Fire & Rescue replaced them all - I can't praise them enough.

Be safe everyone

Emm xx
