The FA has finally got round the table to talk to the FAs of the other Home Countries about reinstigating the Home Internationals, or British Championship.

I think this is a wonderful idea and I've long been a proponent of it. It is pretty certain that it won't be every year as it used to be as we already have a very hectic schedule already but the concensus is that the odd number years (those between the World Cup and the European Championship) could be a perfect time to have a summer mini-championship for just the four Home Nations.

Brilliant idea!

Football every summer! And they're talking about it being as early as 2013!!!

For as long as I can recall every football manager whose team has had a ropey season has blamed the increasing number of games (league, assorted cups, pre-season friendlies, international games and so on) that players are playing every year.

Adding to that number, even for a small number of players, dosn't seem too bright.

Nice to see some original thinking from the FA.

'Blue Sky' or 'outside of the box' I think they call it.

Which means basically, if you get humped playing in your usual tournaments every time, invent a new one and only invite shit teams into it so you win.

Simple when you think about it.

This also means England can avoid being humbled by the giants of world football, Algeria, Slovenia etc etc.

I'm from Scotland.

We're shit at football.

Out national team is, frankly, an embarrassment.

But at least we know we're shit.

That was then and this is now. Scotland especially has spiraled down in its quality of football. It would be a total waste of time for England to get involved.

A total waste of time. England need to be playing better teams if they are going to get any better and Wales, Scotland and Ireland are 3rd rate at best. We would be far better playing friendlies against Spain, France, Germany, Holland or Italy."
bit inflamatory that m8 england are not all that either as it goes but yup better than most of scottish irish and welsh teams but italy france brazil and other quality teams wouldnt touch england for the same reasons not meant as inflamatory just my _iew

Can't say I'm a fan of the Home Internationals, and I'm not looking forward to their return.

Yes, they will stoke up an interest and will probably guarantee that the pubs will be full too.

As for the quality of the football though, that's another story.

We've had big numbers of foreign players here in our leagues for the best part of 20yrs now. We said, we would learn from them, but when I watch any of the Home International sides, I just sit and wonder, just what exactly have we learned.

Well, we've learned how to fall over, cheat and all the other stuff, but have we learned to play football?

Have we fuck?

Reintroducing the Home Internationals might give us something to shout about for a couple of hours but I bet the people in Germany, Spain and Italy will be pissing themselves laughing at us again.

I don't want to beat Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Wales, and there's no guarantee that we would, I want to see us put a good shift in against the best teams in the World to help erase the memory of the shower of shite they served up for us in recent times.

a few good posts and frankly a few dire posts,the one about none of the teams being good enough to play england,i find hilarious,what did england do in the last world cup,they didnt play football,thats for sure,as far as the rest of the world,was concerned the english first team would have been better off goin shopping with their wives as not one of them looked or talked like they wanted to be thee,,

maybe thats the problem,maybe all their own hype has gone to their heads,,so maybe the home internationals would be a good idea,and the managers could use it to play new players,which if im right in thinking,is the only way to see if theyr any good,not just by listening to other people,but il take a brave manager to leave out your terry lampard and shrek,,,sorry rooney,,,

hopefully one manager will actually stand up tp them and pick his own team,unfortuneately i dont think its the current one,,

as for the actual tournament,there will be a winner,the fa,thats it

You are so far off the mark. It is not about how good England are which they are not if we compare them to Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and 6 or 7 other teams. England are average and struggle to get into the top 10. The thing is Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are so bad.

Look at the likes of say Bolton or Newcastle. They dont want to play division 1 teams they want to play in the premier. They want to improve not end up playing route 1 football.

Thats the republic though but still you will get good odds backing the republic. No England are not good but the rest are shit.

Northern Ireland are ranked best at 43rd behind Burkina Faso and Hungary.

Scotland are ranked 54th behind South Africa and Israel.

Wales are 113th behind Iceland and even Syria.

Its like comparing say Spurs with Scunthorpe United, Oldham Athletic and Accrington Stanley. If you had those 4 teams in a mini competition its similar to the home internationals and it wouldn't be a great contest.

The problem with Scottish football is similar to the one in English football, only on a different scale.

The Scottish 'Premier' League is a joke.

There is no strength in depth, soory make that strength or depth, and what little quality there is centres on two teams.

But neither of those two teams would trouble the top half of the english Premiership over a season.

Way too many vested interests.

And the misty eyed belief that we were good once, and so will be again.

It pains me to watch Euro/World cups and see tiny countries reaching the latter stages - Croatia, Cameroon etc.

The argument is given that "their players play in Serie A".

Okay, why don't ours?

Because they are simply nowhere near good enough.

A good scottish player is lucky if a Permeiership side will take him.

And, as with England, there is simply no pride, passion, beleif or desire when they play for their national team.

I'd be happy to see the Home internationals back, it would be a good income stream for all FA's, and a bit of healthy competition.

Anyone who thinks England will turn up and win is an imbecile - it wouldn't matter how bad the other three were; they'd give England a game...

I agree. Teams always up their game when playing an old foe. That's why local derbies are usually a good game.

I hope the Home Int. are re-established, even if it's just for a summer of football for the fans, the player's won't mind I'm sure, if it gives those on the fringes a chance to break into the national side in the bigger competitions.

Sheesh! So many negative miserable people out there. They complain that footballer's don't earn their high wages and moan about having to play too many games and then moan about another mini tournament being doomed to failure because ... they'll be playing too many games. ffs..

The Home Internationals are being planned for a summer where there is no other football committments and I'll think it will be exciting for the old Home teams to meet and play each other if only seldomly or every two years. Plus it may go a long way to repairing our fractured United Kingdom.

It can only be a good thing, I see very little negatives in it apart from the miserable fuckers who don't want to see it happen, cos they have a real downer on life and can't stand to see anyone enjoy themselves, probably.

Oh and Ireland won the six nations rugby in 2009. However Ireland has a population of 6million versus 59.5million english to choose from! Plusrugby in ireland is a minority sport. Eg; there are more rugby clubs in Manchester than there are in the whole of Ireland. Ah but England won the 2003 world cup i hear you cry. Yes against a large country like Australia. Hmm. There are also more rugby clubs in Manchester than there are in the whole of Australia.
