Tories refuses to rule out scrapping DLA

The government has refused to rule out scrapping disability living allowance (DLA) as part of its proposed adult social care reforms.

Concerns over the future of the key disability benefit, which is not means-tested and is intended to cover the extra costs of an impairment, were raised after the government published its care and support green paper in July.

The green paper, currently out to consultation, stated: "We think we should consider integrating some elements of disability benefits, for example attendance allowance, to create a new offer for individuals with care needs."

This could mean money currently allocated for AA (attendance allowance) being used instead by social services to help fund means-tested personal budgets.

But some campaigners raised concerns that DLA (or at least its care component) could also be "integrated" into council funds, with more than 13,000 people signing up within five days to a campaign to save AA and DLA launched by the Benefits and Work website.

Many disabled people have also expressed their concerns about DLA and AA on the government's Big Care Debate website.

But the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) this week declined to rule out the possibility of scrapping DLA.

Torquay

The coalition has a target for reducing the DLA bill by 20-25% by the end of 2012.

This includes removing the Mobility component for those who in a care home for the disabled and rely on this benefit for trips outside of the home One day a week.

But good news on the bankers....the Tories are determined that they retain their bonuses, in fact RBS management are expected to see an increase on their bonuses this year....even though they were saved from extinction with taxpayers money less than Two years ago.

Sorry but I have seen too many abuses of DLA to get upset by it (it's our neighbours beer money whilst his wife works is one example).

FYI before I get flamed we receive DLA for our son (middle band on both components) and would have no problems with it becoming means tested.

I can see what the govt are actually trying to do... which is one universal benefit but with different components attached to it, as in the long run it would save a fair bit in admin and not having to do the same thing for different benefits....

so in the long run people shouldn't really lose out, and as long as people are regularly reviewed to catch those people claiming fraudulantly
