Bloody bulbs

After a week noticing that practically every 10th car has one headlight out, mine suddenly decided to go. They're such a pain in the arse to change too. Fml

No.

LED sidelight builds are brilliant but you need to know if your car has Canbus or not, otherwise you'll have a constant bulb failure warning even if the bulbs are working due to them drawing less load.

You can't have LED headlight bulbs though. I highly recommend Osram Nightbreakers. They're a massive improvement over standard halogen bulbs.

Buy them from eBay for roughly £13 or Halfrauds for £45.

Thanks for that. I'll just get a standard replacement for now to keep the pigs happy and will do the above. I think you're supposed to buy them in pairs normally.

It's a disgrace that car manufacturers have been allowed to get away with designing cars where changing a lightbulb is not a 5 min roadside running repair.

I can just about do mine by removing the panel from inside the wheel arch with the wheels on full lock, but it has to be done by feel - I bought a second hand headlamp off the bay which means I can practice first and get all the orientations imaged in my head before doing it. Otherwise, it's a remove the front valance and remove the headlamp unit.

My sister had to get one done on her newish Vauxhall Corsa yesterday. She said she couldn`t find what bulb to get, so following my advice, she phoned up her local Vauxhall specialist. They had to remove the front bumper to change the headlight bulb!

Some of the trucks at my old w*rkplace needed the front wing removed to change an indicator bulb!

Noticed a few out on other cars and some that drove towards me as if using full beam, not dipped. Intensity was nasty - is that LED, or just inappropriate usage?

A lot of car spares places fit for free or low cost. No need to pay garage's massive labour fees.

Led can appear to dazzle but I think that is more about perception as they have better illumination than we have got used to. Good advice about canbus.

LED don't dazzle and they aren't used as headlamps, just for those ponsy all day running fairy lights.

HID (high intensity discharge), which are high voltage arc lamps as opposed to incandescent filaments, are very bright, but many cars have badly aligned headlamps which also dazzle on dipped beam.

It's most likely badly fitted bulbs, usually carried out by the morons at Halfrauds. Nothing to do with LED sidelight, DRL's, xenon, HID's or any other type of bulb.

Funnily enough I have a very old vehicle and its one spring catch in easy view and the bulbs just pop out on their holder... Takes about 2 minutes to change.

However my friend has a relatively new citron and it took him....

Four hours to change, I'll admit he's no car mechanic but even Citroen quoted 1 hour to change which is why he did it himself but regretted it haha

Amusingly, many European countries require motorists to carry a set of spare bulbs to be able to replace blown bulbs at the roadside.

I also carry a hydraulic jack, set of axle stands, chocks, a four post ramp and 37 special removal tools. Not to mention spare plastic retaining clips to be able to fasten the bumper back on securely.
