Central heating problems

My boiler won't kick in when prompted .

I have an old central heating system Potterton 2000 series. The gas flute is alight and the water pump starts circulating when the system is switched ON.

The boiler however doesn't ignite and kick into action. So no hot water or hot radiators ??

Is anyone familiar with any common faults these might have? ..

Or if anyone in the trade who works inside the Surrey area wants to pop over and take a look, please get in touch

Thanks Peter

Wow! That's a lot of info but I don't think my boiler system has half those components.

It's a simple gravity fed system that's been around since the age of the house; about 25 years old. Its not a combi boiler.

Appreciate the feedback

If it won't kick into life you will need a qualified plumber to look at it. Hopefully they don't give the same diagnosis as mine which packed up last Friday which is it has deceased, it is dead, it is no more. Almost a week now with no heating or hot water but hopefully new boiler in today, but f@&k me they are expensive!

Depends what you buy and who you use, we needed a new boiler when we bought our house.

Baxi duo tech with a 7 year warranty, I bought the boiler and flue kit, plumber just supplied a manga clean and fitted everything. All done for less than £1000 and signed off.

A guy I work with had the same but done a week earlier and a gloworm boiler paid around £1700....was pissed off when I told him

a straightjacket

You can pick up a decent 35kw combi and flue kit for under £1000, the expense comes with the fitting. Going from a gravity fed to a combi is worse cos they have to put 3 extra pipes into the boiler, i.e cold and hot water plus the gas pipe might have to be 22mm whereas old boilers are fed from a 15mm pipe..... Get some quotes OP but to me you've done very well to get 25yrs from a gravity fed

the old pottertons have a pc board and also a fan flued system depending on which boiler that you have

if the pcb board is at fault you wont light past the pilot light

if its fan flued it needs pressure inside of the boiler to light and your internal fan maybe at fault

The poor lad replacing my boiler has just knocked on the door saturated asking where the main stop cock is. I suggested he might have asked that before he started while offering him a towel and trying not to laugh!

Had old boiler for over 25 years. Eventually packed up after not being right for ages. Have been bloody freezing for about a week but just had it replaced and now fantastic. Warm as toast! Wish I done it sooner. Although a little poorer

Air pressure sensor - need to be activated to ignite the burners. They have a flimsy diaphragm that splits. Or fan motor not turning fast enough to create enough pressure to activate sensor.

no matter

We have had similar problems for over a year.. eventually after draining system etc he was told by a heating chap to find a boiler heat control when he took off the front cover . He did that used a screw driver to turn up and we now have hot water and the radiators are boiling.. so relieved. Our boiler isnt a Potterton but I guess it is worth looking inside it to see.

Hello Peter,

the majority on here seem to give up at the first hurdle, boiler doesn't work, fix it with a new one?

Have a look at the burner and see if there's a lock out button, it's usually lit up if it's locked out. Make sure you have fuel.

Boiler are relatively simple things and the first stage after the thermostat calls is to run the fan for a while, then fuel and ignition. If the fire eye sees the flame it will stay on, that's basically it.

Alec

Ahhhhhhhh in same boat although ours is relatively new, valliant ecotec plus 824.

Just packed up outside warranty period.

Flipping error 28/29 54.

Then we got someone out to look at it bugger me working.

Packs up two day's later.

Me thinks faulty ignition although it's sparking or gas valve. But engineer said it was working.

Grrrrrr

When was it last serviced? . If it sparks but does not light up it might be the thermocouple. Twenty five years service from a boiler is good.

Thank you all so much for your comments. Some of which seems like sound advice. Im pretty handy myself when it comes to fixings things. I've been working on cars all my life so know a thing or two about how certain things work.

Last thing I want to do though at 9pm on a weekday Is start stripping boilers. A weekend job me thinks.

It's a good thing that my work has showers to use. The cold I can deal with, but hot water is an inconvenience.

Thanks again for your input. Much appreciated

Depends on what you get for £1400 to comply with warranty on baxi you magnetic filter and decent CH water quality, also need room stat and programmer or programable room stat labour costs depend on what's involved

The boiler itself and 300 quid for the change over....unless of course you get a company in who will rip your eyeballs out

Well a couple of weeks ago I lost the ability to just switch ON the central heating function. Central heating would only work if the HW was switched ON.

I thought the problem for this inconvenience was probably down to the programmer.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and now nothing works. The boiler itself is Thorn Emi unit

.

I'm no expert but

I'd look at the syncron motor inside the three port valve or one of the two port valves depending on how it's plumbed s plan/y plan
