Let me pose another question, as I have something on my mind;

Men, if you are out with your woman and some stranger starts being aggressive towards her, and wouldn't back down, would you get violent?

You get away from the situation if you can.

The only time what you say has happened to me, while I was with my wife, so I couldn't just turn and run, I was still able to calm the situation down very quickly.

Punching something doesn't make a man.

I think it's probably having the strength (physically, mentally, emotionally) but the skill not to use it.

But I confess when it comes to a rough area I do like being with a man who I know can handle himself if push comes to shove - be he an ex-RM with all the training, or an ex-boxer with a lethal right hook, or just someone with the chutzpah to get others to back off.

I can tell you now, if "my man" got violent he wouldn't be my man for much longer. I'm quite capable of looking after myself and a woman is more likely to defuse a situation than another man getting violent

There is nothing wrong with a man crying. It was quite disturbing to see my partner cry for the first time. Our daughter had gone in for an emergency operation (all turned out fine) and he was crying when we got back to the waiting room. It just underpinned how scared we both were. I think he would like to have punched the person who hospitalised her. He didn't though!

Manners maketh the man.

To treat all with respect and dignity and to consider all, regardless of race, religious beliefs, sex, sexual orientation or any other, as equally valid. This to me is what makes a good man good whilst lack of any or all makes a bad man bad.

And I use the word 'man' in it's original sense in the quote, so it equally applies to women to.

As a last resort, yes but simply for protection of myself and company.

Back to the initial question, it depends on what you consider important and how much you are affect by social, financial and emotional norms. I take a bit from here, there and everywhere. But one thing I don't do is let someone else dictate it to me.

"DNA "

People with XX chromosomes can develop hormonally as a man with no outside interference.

Some men have XX chromosomes. Some women have XY chromosomes. Some people have three, four, or even five chromosomes.

DNA is not a reliable way of telling if someone is male or female.

People with XX chromosomes can develop hormonally as a man with no outside interference.

Some men have XX chromosomes. Some women have XY chromosomes. Some people have three, four, or even five chromosomes.

If someone was aggressive to me then I would deal with it. I wouldn't expect anyone else to intervene on my behalf.

Perhaps it's manly to respect other people? Including understanding that women don't need a protector.

Man- literally means having a penis. People attach so many meanings to this label. I think being a good person and being comfortable with your own uniqueness and confident social is paramount to good health, which is most important.

So if you're out with a friend (of any gender) and some is being agressive towards them would you just stand there with your hands in your pockets ignoring what's happening?

If my friend didn't have it handled, then I would try calm the person down. I wouldn't step in because they were a woman, or refuse to step in because they were a man. I would step in because I'm good at diffusing this kind of situation (and equally, I wouldn't expect someone to step in if they weren't good at diffusing those situations).

Surely it's about people here. If you're better than your friend at diffusing situations then you step in. If you're not, then you let them handle it.

Nothing to do with who has a penis. In fact, since people think I'm a woman I usually stand myself in between the aggressor and the person who is at risk. People are statistically unlikely to be violent towards women who are short, especially if they wear glasses. It makes sense that I would put myself out front than any bloke.

this is how I act if someone threatens me I fight back instantly then I will try to calm down the situation straight away so he sees he's done wrong and apologises. If it's someone else I suppose I would just try and calm both down. Defuse. We are all meant to love each other anyway. There's no time for negativity

It's based on the fact that somebody said that being a man was defined by your 'DNA'. I was pointing out that in fact it isn't.

I said nothing about gender. Gender clearly isn't based on DNA.

"Being a man isn't about violence, eating meat, how much you can drink, how well you can grow your facial hair of how well-sculpted you are, it's about having the courage to change your ideals and stick by them despite criticism and it's about standing up for what you believe in whilst simultaneously being responsible for your actions (IMO).

Is that not what being a person is about, rather than a man?"

Hey, just seen this. I guess you're right - sorry, I didn't mean to come across as sexist.

Its difficult to say one or the other because I loath disrespectful behaviour but resorting to violence can be more stressful to the women your with.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I haven't read through the thread but it is a question I have considered with men, young and older, in the last few years.

It was International Men's Day on 19th November and barely ripple. There was the Being a Man festival on 27th (over the whole weekend). Some of the discussions looked really interesting but I haven't seen any reporting on it.

Just as feminism needs men as part of the movement I think the men's movement needs to include discourse with women.
