If something is USB powered - are there any adapters to make it run from a regular household mains socket?

I am looking at getting a cctv camera/recorder for a car and using it to put around the back of the a house. Regular systems need drilling and lots of setting up etc, whereas this car recorder has a motion sensor and is really plug and play but it powered via usb.

should be, i bought a plug that you can charge iphones with using a usb cable.

just ask in an local electric shop, take the leaflet out of your camera with you so they can figure out what you need. tempted to say a phone charger would do it but don't know if it'll blow up your cam or not.

so - there is no reason why I can't just buy some kind of usb wall adapter like we have for phones would you say?? or would the voltage be different as it is designed for a car?

I'm nit that clued up on it

With it being a car cam is it waterproof for a start?

You can get normal cameras cheap enough anyway most are plug n play

If it's not waterproof it won't last 2 minutes.

Could always fit a new plug socket. One with a USB port on it? I have them in my house and they seem to run any thing usb powered just fine

As its for a car I wouldnt of said it was designed to be left on 24 hours a day 7 days a week. May last for a bit but would think eventually it would pack up, plus a USB has no safety cut off. I personally wouldnt want to leave anything plugged into on 24/7.

Thanks for the post Affectionate Bitch, bit complicated but informative.

To other that have posted, I was thinking it would go inside, in a shed or extension with windows so doesn't need to be waterproof.

It says it has motion sensors, so only comes on when there is movement and records over itself but appreciate the idea of leaving something powered on 24/7.

I hadn't thought of converting a plug socked to usb, though I really want it hassle free, plug/play without any need for workmen etc.

It was just an idea for Christmas.. seems quite good as it records if there were any incidents, just the only issue would be charging.

If it's USB powered, then it should conform to the USB standard, which is 5V, and can't remember max current, but you can look it up.

It's kinda the point of USB, any USB device will work with any USB cable and any USB power supply.

BUT, beware cheaply and poorly made chinese crap, just because it's USB, doesn't mean it won't catch fire if it's a piece of shite to start with

great help thanks. My worry was that as it is for a car, I thought it could only run off battery power .. dont know what that voltage is. I'll probably look around for something similar designed for home use that doesn't need external drilling
