"Is this in relation to the woman who has won the right to refuse life saving treatment as shes 'lost her sparkle'? I think it must be a very sad existence to feel that the only reason you have to live is for your looks and wealth. To value that above wanting to be around for your children as long as possible is shocking! " Not only kids but to enjoy the great gift that is life.

"I'm not afraid of dying nor getting old, I'll hang around as long as possible. You only get one shot at life and I want as much as I can get In any case, I want to be a grumpy old man " Totally agree although I'm already grumpy so not sure what the next phase is

"I agree having the right to refuse treatment is a good thing, I just think it should be for the right reasons. Not wanting to be ugly, old or poor isn't a reason, in my opinion. Not wanting to be relying on people or having no support etc. But this is the woman who divorced one of her 4 husbands for having a decline in his income! I wonder if she would have felt the same had she not been as blessed in the looks department" To her the reasons are right, I don't think we can say to another person that their reasons for refusing treatment are wrong because they aren't the same as ours.

"I'm have no fear of getting old or dying. I do only want to live when I'm a lot older if I am fit and healthy, to be 80/90 and my life is rubbish due to not being mobile or in constant pain, I wouldn't want to live. " Or losing ones mind .... I only want to live for as long as i am in good health

" Not only kids but to enjoy the great gift that is life." Our species has 'developed' to a point where we now take many things for granted. The more we take for granted the less we value. Most species on this planet are only concerned with survival, life is all that matters. I cannot help but feel saddened that value of life in our world could be measured in vanity or a material way.

"I've got books to read before I die and boxsets to finish and the internet to complete. " Let's hope one of those books contains the secret to extremely long life then Tina

"The court case was about her ability to make those decisions. Had they decided she wasn't, they would have forced treatment upon her and I think THAT is deplorable. This complete fear of dying is utterly wrong and keeping us all alive at all costs is even worse." Agreed. My aunt spent her last nine months of life happily, we all had a chance for an extended and loving goodbye and she had the opportunity to ensure nothing was left undone, had she agreed to treatment her life would have been longer but of lesser quality.

My dad took a few goes at dying and he would have done had he not been on the receiving end of excellent NHS skills. Each time he opened his eyes, he was even more miserable than before. He eventually died a horrible death at 88 that would never had happened if he had not had that 'life at all costs' care previously. To clarify, he did not attempt suicide, each time he was found in bed but unconscious.

"my cousins hubby was 60.. felt ill so stayed on sofa ... following day he was dead .. he didn't want to die but it must be awful to know someone that wants to leave the rest of the family by choice" It will only be a few years before I have no family left. I don't have kids. No one will mourn my passing and I simply don't want to die alone, forgotten - or robbed of my memories and personality by the passage of time or the onset of disease.

"Well the woman in question has since passed away and in my opinion her refusing dialysis treatment was probably the least selfish thing she's done in her entire life. Why? because now some poor bastard who does want to live and requires dialysis to do so will get treatment that would have otherwise gone to this horrid woman. They may be doubly lucky and get a transplant." She's horrid because she wanted to die? Fair enough. Personally I'd say drugging someone then strapping them to a chair for 4 hours every other day for the next 20 years is way more fucked up.

"It's actually our right to ACCEPT treatment. Declining it makes treatments a default setting. " Well it is the default because if you had to wait for people to accept many would die long before regaining useful conciousness

She's not horrid because she wanted to die but the way she led her life, totally selfishly. I also believe treating someone who doesn't want treatment to be wrong. What makes you think they need to strap dialysis patients to chairs, everyone I've met is only too happy have their treatment, they may bitch an moan at times but they always come back for their next session me included. PS I think I might move to Wales since they gone opt out with the donations I might stand more chance of getting that kidney I could do wih.

" I don't think they need to strap normal dyalisis patients down but that's what they went to the judge to ask for. To sedate, restrain and treat her. Because she didn't want it.
