Health or wealth?

Hey guys,

I'm currently working on my thesis and doing some research to understand what people generally value more.. Their health or their wealth.

Different communities value each differently due to various reasons.

Don't worry I'm not using responses in my research, just thought it would be nice to see what people thought on here really.

Hopefully it will give a nice little debate

Cheers!

I feel like it is a bit of a false dichotomy....neither is good without the other.

But I suppose if I absolutely had to choose I would choose health.

Yep - if you have those things, and can keep them, you're as rich as you need to be.

I agree with Courtney, it depends if your ill health is something curable and how debilitating.

As wealth could give you a better quality of life and help you recover.

Having said that, I guess as I get older my health is important.

Perhaps it's down to age groups which you would choose??

"What kind of pointless question is this?"

As said above.. I'm doing research on the matter. If you want to know a little more.. There has been found to be a difference amongst the wealth classes in relation to how they value their health. This could be down to a number of influences.

My point of asking was just to see what people thought on here as I'm spending a great of time working on it.

Perhaps if you understood it more you would see why it isn't such a pointless question. I.e how the government dictates much of the countries health quality through wealth. So what do they see as more valuable.. Our health or the countries wealth..

Hope this helps

It can buy you treatment but that can't necessarily save you from the lasting effect of a stroke or heart disease for example.

Health for me

Health. But one of the biggest indicators of health outcomes is wealth (having a job, having good housing) so the two aren't completely divisible.

As an example, if I had to choose between.

£1 million

Or

Being cured of Crohn's disease.

I'd take the cure everytime. So my answer would be health.

Health, 100%

I was unfortunate to have a lung tumour at 19, my daughter was 6months old and I had to spend quite abit of time away from her, money couldn't change that

I don't need wealth to be happy and neither do my children. As long as we have our health and love we will thrive

I've got diabetes, don't have many complications from it but when i do i put up with them mostly.

I'd take the money, you can pay to get the best treatment straight away and still have money afterwards. When i need new kidneys i'll buy some, need my eyes sorting, i'll buy that too. Feet falling off? No problemo, new feet please. Plus i'd buy a DDR machine and dance all the time, that's my life goal now my kids are grown up nearly.

I believe money can buy almost anything except health, love and happiness (I am sure there are others and of course you can argue that money can buy the best medical treatment but surely it is better to not require that in the first place?).

I'd say being healthy is a blessing and on we often take for granted. Surely anyone who is suffering a very serious or life threatening disease would be willing to trade all their wealth in order to live the remainder of their life healthy?

On that basis I'll say health for sure.

Good luck OP with your thesis!

That makes much more sense.

Hope I don;t get shat on by the PTB for posting a dodgy link but look at this from YouGov:

The curious link between prosperity and pessimism

.

The official statistics are clear. Our generation is better off, safer and destined to live longer than our parents’ generation – and probably than any preceding generation. True, living standards in Britain and many other countries have stalled in the past few years, but this doesn’t invalidate the larger truth. And even if the long-term growth rate is just 2% a year, living standards generally will double in the next 35 years. We ought to be optimistic about the long-term future, hover much we fear short-term austerity.

Health every time , I know people who won the pools (remember that?!) many years ago and it changed them , a lot of paranoia crept in and one-upmanship, was unpleasant to see . A friend of 61 who is approaching retirement has just been hit with an aggressive cancer diagnosis, all that planning for retired life and unlikely he'll now reach it. so HEALTH every time for us.

Health without a doubt. There have been a couple of things in my life that happened and caused me to rethink my work and rebalance my life. Without our health, wealth would be pointless to me. Wealth is only extrinsically valuable, as in it enables me to do things I couldn't do without it, whereas as good health, good friends, good work and good questions are intrinsically valuable in having a good life.

Your question though is a good question in my opinion

If I had to choose then I'd have health every time.

I've worked on a paediatric oncology ward and the parents with money would have swopped it all in a heartbeat for their children's lives.

I've also worked with adults with chronic pain and again there is no amount of money can help these people to live productive pain-free lives.

It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

I would say wealth, but are you not starting from a false premise if you are suggesting that the two are not linked?

I would have thought that there is overwhelming evidence of a direct correlation between wealth and good health.

Your right there is a lot of research to suggest it is linked. And I believe wealth plays a big impact in people's health and values in general. But there is evidence to suggest that people will often neglect health in order improve their financial status. When I see patients example, often they will want to refuse forms of therapy or refuse to go off sick from work, although this is often in the best interests of their health. So although they can influence one another they are both separate values which can often take a priority.

That's part of the reasons to why I'm researching this, to understand why there is such deviation between people.

Sorry if there's spelling mistakes.. It's early

Thanks for the explanation.

I am sure you will have considered it, but the fact is the we her in the UK are very lucky and are all extremely wealthy and that buys us good health (as can be seen in our average life expectancy). When one considers relative wealth verses health then I would suggest that most people will act in a financially acquisitive manner at the expense of health. I would further suggest that this behaviour is a result of learned complacency because we are so used to the health service our wealth can support.
