How close does your car get to the advertised MPG?

folkestone

I know that the advertised MPG from car manufacturers come from test conditions and i don't expect to even be a close as 10MPG out, but my hybrid car must be about 25 MPG out from what they tell me i could get.

Ours is suppose to do around 45 mpg on a run. We get 39mpg commuting so quite pleased.

Mine doesn't fare well at all, manages about 8-10 mpg if driven hard!!

On a run I can expect 30 at most if I behave myself.

My little winter van on the other hand is great, can't really measure it though as it runs on anything from veg oil, heating oil & occasionally diesel! Best banger I ever bought.

7 yr old Accord - does pretty much what's advertised. On motorway runs, it exceeds it.

My daily is supposed to get 62mpg but I'm averaging 49mpg over 4k miles.

My old toy is better measured in gpm

Maybe the figures were attained with other features activated? Like smart cruise control systems etc. Also, it'll probably be gutsy for the first 1-2k miles until it's run in mate.

Mine is out but it's largely poor driving. I get 56 on commute but should be 60#.Diesel golf.

2005 Passat and 2008 Touran. Both diesels, both do what they say on the tin. Worst I ever had was a 2002 Merc A Class, Holly drives a Smart forfour and it's fantastic!

I've heard they do tests on a flat road at 50mph to get them figures...

I can get within 4/5mpg using slower speeds on a motorway run

by a lake with my rod out

they also drive behind a wind breaker a big truck to get rid of aerodynamic drag (slip steeaming) and this saves lots pf mpg

the combined for my c220 cdi is 39mpg, just done nearly 500 miles and the display is showing an average of 45mpg

when i had the subaru impreza the combined was 31 mpg, i often got 37+mpg

had a 2.0 8v vauxhall frontera sport dont think i ever managed more than 23mpg out of it no matter how steady i drove it

Mine exceeds the advertised mpg figures. It a also 60bhp more powerful than standard.

The secret is removing the stupid environmental systems that actress do more harm than good in the long run. Whoever decided the EGR valve and swirl flaps were a good idea on a diesel wants punching in the nuts!

A fellow bmw owner I see.

530d does about 44mpg on a mixed driving. 530 miles to a tank (60l)

The Rx8.... Well...200 for the Same amount of fuel.

When I look at a car's official mpg figures, I take the worst quoted, is it Urban or Extea Urban and add 20%.

The resultant figure is usually very close to my 'real world' average mpg.

I also usually brim the tank when filling up, so 'brim to brim' is an accurate measure.

BMW?... I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a Beemer (and before anyone says anything - I've never had to push any of my 5 Alfa's).

EGR's and swirl flaps are common on all diesels nowadays (thank the Americans and the California emissions regulations).

Whoever thought that redirecting sooty exhaust gases mixed with oil vapour back into an engines inlet manifold was a good idea wants shooting. They're fine when brand new but after a few thousand miles everything becomes clogged up with gunk and the engine actually becomes dirtier and less efficient. Not to mention far less reliable. I've seen loads of engines destroyed because a swirl flap has fallen off (due to carbon/soot build up) and ended up in a cylinder. BMW have had massive issues with it.

Remove them and the EGR and the problem disappears.

There are websites (Honest John if I recall) that give actual MPG and mark it as a percentage against manufacturer claimed MPG.

Likewise. Haven't the foggiest.

I go by how many miles I can do on a tank of fuel - approximately 600 - that's it.
