Don't get me wrong, I love America.

But we've imported Halloween, Black Friday, and now apparently commerce is trying to sell us Thanksgiving.

Please.....no more

Why do we need thanksgiving we didn't break bread with the native Americans! I understand if the American who have moved here celebrate it but no Brit has a reason to.

It's actually a Celtish tradition, adopted by the Romans, spread through the empire before Christianity.

The following day is All Saints Day (ie for those saints that don;t have an actual day) so in the medieval mind the conflation of the two night of the dead/day of the holy led their superstitious little minds to make lanterns out of root vegetables (typically turnips) to scare off the ghouls & ghosts.

Irish immigrants to America took the tradition with them but, in the absence of turnips, used pumpkins instead...

Hence... pumpkinmania.

As stated another indigenous festival nicked by those crafty Christians to make the transition to monotheism easier. Halloween/bonfire night roughly coincides with the traditional Samhainn festival, Easter has roots in Beltain and Eostre who I think was a germanic fertility goddess (please correct if wrong). Even christmas traditions were "borrowed" with many older religions having a god born in a low place, persecuted, killed and resurrected. Mithras is a good example of this.

Nothing is new...its all just repackaged

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Wasn't Christmas nicked off the pagans and rebadged?

I know it wasn't on the OP's list, but it does serve to show that the whole thing is just a matter of perspective.

All Hallows Eve has been celebrated here for many years. It stems from the Pagan tradition of Samhain.

It's the "Truck or treat" that is Americanised pap.

Not exactly. Although the term "trick or treating" may be American, the same sort of thing took place in Scotland in the 16th century. It was termed mumming or guising. People dressed up, visited houses and sang in return for food.

Wrong. Thanksgiving certainly does not represent genocide. To believe that, and indeed say it, is to fundamentally misunderstand another culture. Thanksgiving is meant to represent understanding and cooperation between the early settlers and the Indians. Did very awful things happen between those two groups, yes. Does Thanksgiving celebrate that? No.

I wish people could just refrain from talking about things they don't know about. It leads to insulting generalizations and mischaracterizations.

Totally agree - I have resisted anything American for years - simply because I find it all so false and crass - I won't even do "high fives" - the problem is we have become a nation of dumb sheep-like types that copies whatever crap we see and have largely lost our own sense of national identity (thanks mainly to the left wing pussies who would have us celebrate and embrace anything but our own culture)

Have the numpties who worship Americanisation not yet worked out that every single event is designed with one thing in mind - a marketing ploy to extract money from you - baby showers !! - makes you want to vomit "

Yes, you are completely right. Everything British is good and traditional and everything American is "numpty" and commercial.

How ridiculous. Americans have traditions, too. I personally don't care what British people do with our American traditions. But to dismiss other culture's traditions is pretty crass in my opinion.

For the record, the only reference to Thanksgiving I've seen or heard (apart from on here) is my grandson telling me that the Thanksgiving special of the Regular Show is the one that was on last year and my Mirrors of Albion game putting on special quests. Not exactly shoving it in our faces are they.

"Americans celebrating thanksgiving, in the full knowledge that it represent one of the most egregious acts of genocide in history, is just disgusting - imagine Germany celebrating Kristallnacht or Auchwitz and you're just about getting there... sick as fuck!

-Courtney

Have I said otherwise? I have already said that bad things have occurred. But Thanksgiving does not celebrate that. To insinuate that it does is just factually wrong.

Halloween is a traditional British celebration

Since when??

We never ever had it in this country and the first time I experienced it was in the U.S. in the 1960's. It only came here early 1980's."

Halloween originates from a Celtic Pagan celebration that originated in Ireland.

An ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

But the Americans commercialised it to become what it is today.

Thanksgiving, is actually more English than Americab, we called it harvest feast. Henry 8th, banished it, when he took over the Catholic Church. English pilgrim celebrated it in American, to celebrate the a successful summers harvest. Then American, glamorised it.

Pizza was eaten in Italy before it arrived in America. It was Italian immigrants in America who began making it as a commercial product and selling it. Other countries had similar flat bread type food with toppings too,but it came here via America.

"This is why I love the forums, - you learn a new thing every day!

......today i learnt that along with the hamburger, hot dog & nachos, pizza originates from The States too!!

Pizza was eaten in Italy before it arrived in America. It was Italian immigrants in America who began making it as a commercial product and selling it. Other countries had similar flat bread type food with toppings too,but it came here via America.

There was a touch of sarcasm in my post

I know but I wanted to elaborate. We probably would have got pizza at some point if it hadn't have taken off in America. Is bubble gum American? alongside the hamburger & hot dog you mean?

I'm not sure if anyone would admit responsibility to chewing/bubblegum, - there could potentially be massive lawsuits! "

No idea about burgers or hot dogs. Who would dream up a skinless sausage made up of mostly pigs feet and snouts I wonder?

I totally agree with you.

And calling a day off work a 'bank holiday' is bordering on repressive considering what those bastards are responsible for over the last few years.

Also the word 'holiday' is derived from 'holy day', - & I fail to see anything remotely holy about bankers!

Halloween is a traditional British celebration

Since when??

We never ever had it in this country and the first time I experienced it was in the U.S. in the 1960's. It only came here early 1980's."

What planet are you on? Halloween has been in Britain for over a hundred years!

"Americans celebrating thanksgiving, in the full knowledge that it represent one of the most egregious acts of genocide in history, is just disgusting - imagine Germany celebrating Kristallnacht or Auchwitz and you're just about getting there... sick as fuck!

-Courtney"

Sorry I have to disagree Courtney - where was the understanding and cooperation in taking the land off the native Americans by force?

It has its roots in very old Celtic traditions so we've had it here for thousands of years before America.

rochdale

When inter-railing around Europe (does anyone do that anymore) I was in Venice, & checking the number of Lira in my pocket to see if I could afford a slice of pizza from the street vendor nearby.

I heard a young American voice say "hey look Momma, they have pizza here too!"

Made me giggle to myself, I looked up & saw mother rolling her eyes & father fighting the urge not to laugh as we all grinned at each other
