How does it affect you?

Now I am a strong person always have been and sometimes always expected to be....I started sleep walking about 13 years ago when I started a new job and sometimes found myself in the shower at 2am thinking it was morning and time to go to work.

Currently going through a stressful family bereavement and spent all of last night on the phone listening to others express their grief and offering condolences and being the strong one as usual....when I went to bed I was normal, when I woke up mid sleep I was disorientated and found out I was sleeping upside down in my bed

What weird things have you done to make me feel better?

Please feel free to make me feel better about myself

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

Sending kind thoughts your way through this Foxy.

I also sleep walk, and I have terrible night terrors, and waking dreams when I get stressed. Its not pleasant.

I slept walked and peed in my friends wardrobe when I was doing exams and living in a shared house at college.

When I am stressed for general things I usually get very argumentative and snippy. But Marc usually calms me down.

The only time I was stressed beyond fixing was when my father died. The only thing that saved me was getting a dog. And I love it to bits. That dog saved my life.

So think about tomorrow, not today. And get yourself a dog. Then everything will be fine!

No I am just a naturally strong person that people seem to expect me be all of the time, and I don't even think I am stressed until it is played out in my sleep that is what I meant.

I've slowly started to stop being the person everyone 'offloads' on to.

I know that's not the only issue you highlighted, but it could show a pattern in your behaviour where you try to make others feel better to the detriment of your own wellbeing in other situations too…

In small steps, I've made certain people aware that I have my own problems too. Whilst I know not to ask for support, I make it clear that my capacity is limited.

I use humour, irreverence, be flippant…it takes a while & it will probably be resisted at first, but looking after yourself & your wellbeing is not being selfish

Sorry, I didn't mean to make this thread a heavy one, I was just interested in others funny stories on what happened with them, as waking upside down was a new one on me and thank god I am single!

While going through the traumatic break up with my X one night while asleep I loaded the washing machine with clothes without checking the pockets. X had a load of loose change in his pocket which ended up going through the wash and breaking the machine. I put his work shoes in as well as all his best clothes. It wouldn't spin or drain lol.

Thanks for sharing! Hey who would check pockets when asleep? That's too logical! As for shoes etc? Hey ho, goes along the same lines....I'm glad it is not just me

Once went out for 2 hours on the bicycle, just to clear my head. Only thing was it 2 am, I was in work the next day.

I had no memory of me doing it. X used to tell me off for not checking pockets lol When I was small my mum used to find me asleep in random places. Under the bed, hanging out the bed with my head on the floor. She found me in the bottom of the wardrobe a few times.

When I'm stressed it get very weird realistic dreams. I once thought my friend took a pot noodle every time she went to a restaurant cos she didn't like eating out. It was a few days until I realised that was ridiculous and that I must've dreamt it.

Have done similar, but went for a looooong walk in the early hours. Lost track of where I was for a bit but certainly cleared my head!

One problem is when someone is strong on the outside it does not always mean that the are immune from stress. I can understand that first hand. Sometimes it is nice if the people you are strong for once in a while come over and say that they are there for you. Although I have to admit I generally say I am ok even when down. If I say I am down it means I really really am down. I try to be the one helping people out. Always been a helper. Sometimes I can get in the way if I try to help too much. Heart in the right place and now and again the body gets in the way.

You've recognised that you have some challenges. That's the first step to getting yourself in a nicer place and state of mind.

Get to your GP asap, they are really supportive and tuned in to stress and depression these days.

Lots of support coming at you through the thread, everyone's experiences and solutions are different, there's no one stop fix.

Other than talking of course. You'll find a way through this with some support.

Been there too. I'd you'd like to chat privately please feel free.

Thanks for everyone's words of support but I did really start this thread as a laugh ie what behaviour changed within you without expecting it. I mean I am not going to go into work and say ' yeah I found myself sleeping top to tail this morning' Especially in the role I am in, but sleep walkers please feel free to add your own! x
