So I've just received a well written and complimentary message and I want to reply, trouble is the sender has used words outside of my vocabulary range and I don't know what the hell he's saying. I'm fairly intelligent and not a complete dunce, but I do sometimes struggle with big words

Anyways it got me thinking.. Am I the only thicko here that reads a message and is like..

pardon?!

Seriously, copy and paste into ms word and highlight any words you're unsure of, use right click, synonyms or dictionary and see what they mean.

Here are a few:-

Advantageous — helpful

Ameliorate — improve

Cognizant — aware

Commence — begin, start

Commensurate — equal

Consolidate — combine

Deleterious — harmful

Disseminate — issue, send

Endeavor — try

Erroneous — wrong

Expeditious — fast

Facilitate — ease, help

Inception — start

Implement — carry out

Leverage — use

Optimize — perfect

Prescribed — required

Proficiencies — skills

Promulgate — issue or publish

Proximity — near

Regarding — about

Remuneration — reward, payment

Subsequently — after or later

If I get time I might try and put a nicely worded message to you with all of the above words but not necessarily in order.

It's difficult because some just have a wider vocabulary and its just the way they speak. I would never insult somebodies intelligence by deliberately dumbing my vocab down (not that it's huge compared to many anyway) and I really hope nobody would do that to me.

Please stop calling yourself stupid. x

Everyone is an expert at something. Not knowing certain words doesn't make you stupid, but neither does it make people clever if they do use big words. It just makes you both different to each other.

If it bothers you, perhaps you're not compatible. Some people talk that way to try to appear clever, some people talk that way just because they do.

There are threads on here sometimes that I don't understand because they're discussing something in language that I just don't understand, I know they're typing English but it might as well be an obscure Tibetan dialect

I'm ok with long words of more than two syllables. It's the rarely seen in public life, ostentatious stuff I don't have time for. I mean,if I was sitting in a pub, waiting for someone to finish a sentence with lots of big words in I'd be bored shitless. However,I do find it easier to say a big word that precis a whole sentence.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

It's such a shame that our collective vocabulary is being reduced via this peer pressure.

There are plenty of words that I don't understand, but at least if it's written I can discreetly look it up. Why would anyone not want to increase the communication tools at their disposal?

Linguistic variety should be celebrated, not denigrated.

I love words. I regularly encounter new ones and look them up. Language is something I've always loved. If people think that makes me a wanker than so be it; I'd rather sound like me than have to nitpick over every word and phrase I use on the forums just in case I use a word that might be obscure to some but not to me.

It is "interpreter", unless you want them to produce a translation in writing.

Just yesterday, I was laughed at for using the word "indeed".

Amen, sister! I don't use my vocabulary to impress people, I use it because the words I know are appropriate to the conversation I'm having. Flashing boobs also helps, to be fair, but if I'm flashing boobs, I'm probably too d*unk to remember half my vocabulary list anyway!!
