How do you plead?

I'm curious as to why this expression is used in court, and what others think of it?

I mean, I personally see pleading as getting down on your knees and grovelling, essentially acknowledging someone's status and importance as being considerably greater than your own, it's a demeaning concept and the fact the court would imply this toward you seems rather primitive.

Thoughts? (and no, I haven't been to court recently)

Menston near Ilkley

It's only demeaning if you don't understand the word fully. In a legal situation it is to 'Present arguments for or against'.

cause its traditional meaning is to argue.

so from its use of say "having someone plead your case" it slowly became more associated with begging for something from someone in a position of power.

Lifted from an online dictionary :

There'd be a rule whereby the defendant can only do jazz-hands if they are wearing tap shoes ....

I know it's hard to believe and ridiculous as it may sound, but apparently some people just don't appreciate the sartorial elegance of blokes wearing frocks noshing cocks.....!
