Do you volunteer?

It's been a while since I've done some volunteering but I'm sort of thinking I should be doing something.

What do you do and what made you choose that particular area to volunteer in?

I did, weekly with THT. Stopped when I fell ill as I couldn't commit my time. I did outreach stuff and worked in their call centre.

No. Sad to admit it but I don't. Sounds crass but I don't have time with a busy work schedule.

My charitable work comes from payroll deductions to worthy causes and lots of sponsorship of others. But I wish I could volunteer more and admire and respect those that do take their own free time to help others xx

Oh, I did it as a friend was affected. I chose to volunteer as I felt guilty about the money I earn and felt I had to give back more to society than just cash. It's a purely selfish motivation.

I do dog walking at the local animal shelter

I have two dogs of my own and I though may as well take a couple more out with me

I prefer animals to people so would sooner help them

I help with fundraising for a charity that shelters people escaping domestic abuse. I volunteer for Shelter and at out local hospital.

I've been a volunteer gardener for 3 years. I loved it so much I chose to gain some horticulture qualifications and become a professional gardener.

I work for a charity that supports local groups. I volunteer as well, and also do sponsored events to raise funds locally - my next big fundraiser is tough mudder 2016!

Yeah it was another of your posts that made me think about it. I look at my local volunteering website every so often but I'm sort of waiting for something to jump out at me.

I don't really think there is such a thing as true altruism cause it absolutely does make me feel better that I'm giving something back so there's always an element of that.

I'm just looking for inspiration really. I think maybe I'd like to do something with people. I'm sort of thinking about older people who don't have anyone. Shopping or company or something. I've befriended before but it in the mental health sector.

I'm curious about your experiences with disclosure checks too. I just assumed it was mandatory but it's not.

That's actually maybe something for another thread but I'm not sure my blood pressure can take it.

That was great of you. And yeah, once a week is what I was thinking. We already donate, but I would love to help out the dogs in a real way

I volunteer with the local drugs and alcohol rehab service.

It's really interesting and I love the different type of people I meet. I do different jobs according to where they are short when I go in. My favourite is working with the homeless outreach team.

I don't have the time or inclination. I get my get out of hell free cards off helping the old lady next house over by collecting her prescriptions and running her to hospital in the middle of the night when she mistakes glass cleaner for her eye drops.

I also chainsaw her hedge, garden and tell her off over her knot but she never listens

I used to be a leader in the Girl Guides but it sort of turned into a glorified babysitting thing and I ended up feeling too responsible for getting the kids home cause their parents didn't bother to collect them. Shame really cause I loved the Brownies when I was wee but I work too late to get there on time through the week so I did the Guides instead.

I think it's more satisfying than donating. It's a completely different type of joy when you get to actually take care of the dogs.

I really wanted to play with them all day but I wasn't allowed because some of them weren't capable of it and had different conditions and disorders.

I'm not a leader!! Far too much responsibility!!! Yes they let girls in now & we're on our 2nd female district commissioner.

I help out with the gang show - making costumes, back stage dressing during show week, deep cleaning the hut, raking leaves etc... The boys help too so no sitter needed

I spend a few hours a week fitting cookers and washing machines that are given to charity and then given to needy families

When you see how some people live and how little they actually have it does make you sad

Especially when you see the people that are rehoused from domestic violence

I've been far too focused on getting sorted myself over the past few months. To do anything that would be much help, I do like to try to remember to donate food items into the collection trolley when we go shopping though.

I am a member of crohns and colitis UK and would like to start donation blood once I'm ok'd to do so. If they find a cure for crohns in my lifetime that would be fucking awesome

Told by a court eg sex offender you can work with kids

There is a Second bit of the crb that you don't see and your not allowed to see and that's the letter sent from the chief Constable if your suspected in a case or have a series of allegations that can't be proved

The rest of your crb is for information only and gives an idea of your offendin history but does not disbar you from working with kids by

A registered sex offender rapist etc is only disbarred from working with children whilst they are actually on the sex offenders register as soon as there requirement to sign the register ends so does The ban on working with children

It is a criminal offence to apply for a job working with children etc when your on the register but is not an offence to baby sit others children unless you have been told by probation no unsupervised acces with kids

As some of you may know I run a charity for autistic kids, I do it because having two autistic kids and realising there wasn't any services in our area, like support groups for parents and professionals or clubs for kids.

I have been to some very interesting places whilst volunteering

I can't imagine stopping but life/work sometimes gets in the way

Yes, I worked voluntarily for Help the Aged. It was lovely and I will do it again. I basically visited old ladies and sat talking to them.for a few hours, one lady liked going for afternoon tea so we did that. The befriending service is really important I feel

I use to a couple of years ago. I helped out at a local youth club two nights a week, which I really enjoyed till they closed it down because of funding etc. then I did one day a week with sure start helping out a single parent for three hours a week. Sadly I stopped that as my mum became really ill

I did these as it was time away from caring from mum full time

I should really start up again as I really enjoyed it

Yes it does a little bit but I meant to say the opposite and the checks made are very thorough and not just looking at criminal record

If you look into criminal record checking it's actually quite complicated and very interesting

Especially the amount thay goes on behind the scenes that can make you feel like a criminal when you realise what has been checked and you did not realiswxrhey did that

Not volunteering in the true sense but I`m area co-ordinator for a large tractor club and hopefully in the New Year will be doing some proper volunteering for one or both of the preserved railways in my area.

I've volunteered for 13 years with a youth group, through my baby who was 1 and has special needs, I was doing three jobs and definitely didn't have time.

I get really cross with people who say "they don't have enough time". It's not full time, volunteering even an hour is totally attainable for everyone.

The satisfaction you get from volunteering is immeasurable and it looks great on you CV.

Do it! There are voluntary posts in hospitals, youth groups, charities etc etc.
