Gym vs old fashioned.

I'm in a debate right now with a friend about this. I personally prefer exercising and running outdoors on my own listening to music, but he's saying he feels works harder if he is being spectators by strangers and of course 1 costs and the other is free. What's you're opinion?

Brighton - even Hove!

There is more motivation if people are training with you. It's like unspoken competition plus I get to see ladies swearing in tight Lycra which is good.

Try both. See what you prefer.

I think it works better if you have someone to train with, to make you do it. I don't have anyone like that so went down a paid trainer route. It costs, of course, but has been more motivational for me than working on my own

I prefer the gym. I give up to easy if I just go for a run or exercise at home. If I have paid for the gym and travelled to the gym I feel I need to train harder x

I think it depends on the person.

I personally tried a gym once...didn't really work for me. I can't just go out and run alone, either. I prefer team sports.

Everyone is different.

For running outdoors treadmills make my ankles hurt.

Weights gym just because you need some safety equipment that I haven't got yet

Fun fact gym comes from the ancient Greek word gymnós which means naked as training was traditionally done naked.

It's also where philosophers or simply ordinary people would gather to discuss philosophical issues while they trained as mental and physical training and improvement were very intertwined in their culture.

I prefer an activity like swimming, aquarobics, dance or a sport. I can't do sports any more so I walk a lot. I've done the gym and it bored me to death.

I'd like to row. I used to be quite good at it and I like the water sounds.

Although it costs much more, I find I don't have the motivation unless I join the gym. We both need to, we have agreed. that is as far as we have got

Good combination of both for me.

Gym in the daytime and outdoor runs in the evening!

Outdoors for me. I run at gym treadmill when the weather is horrible outside but unless the gym has really good air conditioning, running indoors isn't that nice.

I find running my local parkrun every saturday is good for motivation. Sometimes i will run flat out, but often i will try to help pace one of the runners there who 5-10 minutes slower to get a personal best by running with them.
