"Trainline.com sometimes comes up cheaper but avoiding main stations is cheaper. Ie derby to Liverpool £50 open return. One station further from Derby to 4 stations further than Liverpool £20.50 return. Less than half the fare. Works everywhere even Aberdeen . Paying less for longer journeys But you don't have to get off at other stations you can get off at the city station " Best tip ever ! Am definitely going to look out for that

"If you are travelling with one TOC, so Derby to Liverpool would be with East Midlands Trains or Cross Country, book direct with the TOC (train operating company) If you want specific advice, register with Rail UK Forums, there is a section on there for advice and the guys there will know all the best ticketing routes, split ticketing, authorised routes etc. And they advise people to avoid Trainline.com as they are a booking agent and get their money by charging a booking fee." Actually changing onto the Virgin at Crewe but I did one better. I moved north I used train line for times and usually paid on the train. Have to say train line got the prices right to the penny whereas others got it wrong. Swings and roundabouts Going further for cheaper has worked all over England though. From Dorset to Aberdeen

"You can get a train from York to Leeds for £3 on Trainline.com but you have to travel when they say. I managed to get a train from York to Ulverston reduced from £70 to £30 by checking train times." Wow! Sorry I won't be there to sell you mulled wine this year.
