"Drop the cardio and lift heavy you will burn fat faster weather your male or female I don't want to turn the fat to muscle though, isn't that bad? And it's the female here ![]() Fat doesn't turn to muscle - they are two different things. Building muscle will a) burn more calories and thus reduce fat and b) improve your silhouette. Its rare for women to bulk up like body builders without steroids and an insane weights routine.

"I can't stand routines and training plans as such and I find they totally sap my enthusiasm. I just make it up as I go along and do whatever makes me happy that day although I do know that I'm roughly covering all my areas equally. I always say to people that if I'm in the gym doing some form of exercise and not at home surfing the sofa then I can't be going that far wrong! Though I must admit I do pay particular attention to my legs as whilst I'm not really looking to build or increase the size of any other part of my body I am looking to better the tone in the rear of my thighs. " "Tone" is a fat issue though not a muscle issue

"Drop the cardio and lift heavy you will burn fat faster weather your male or female I don't want to turn the fat to muscle though, isn't that bad? And it's the female here ![]() medium intensity regular cardio is what you want to be doing if you want to lose weight. That coupled with a calorie controlled diet. Get yourself a heart rate monitor and train in the fat burning heart rate zone. Garmin do a number of deacent models. Weight training increases muscle mass and strength and where it is true bigger muscles are like a bigger car engine they will burn more fuel, the effort in building them may be better spent on cardio work outs. Cardio work outs also have the benefit of staving off heart disease and type 2 diabetes

Bear in mind some of these guys are half my age, and should be fitter than me, when i ramp it up to 19kmh they can barely do 10 seconds before they have to give up, where as i have to do 90 seconds x 6 to finish my session.

"So hubby wants to loose his belly he does circuit training body weight exercise 3 days a week and trys to do weights in between should he do lighter weights more reps to add the cardio into it or heavier weights and less reps ?" Up the cardio (30 mins 5 times a week) and change the diet - diet is key - cut out bad carbs in particular like spuds, white bread ,white pasta and rice too And up the White meats and lean green veg and cut out sweets sugar and cakes /pastries Wouldn't drop weights but alternate an abs work out for each training day

"So hubby wants to loose his belly he does circuit training body weight exercise 3 days a week and trys to do weights in between should he do lighter weights more reps to add the cardio into it or heavier weights and less reps ?" If he's already circuit training then there's an element of cardio in that anyway! Using lighter weights are pretty ineffective I'd say! Heavier weights and less weights is better - as long as his posture is correct and he's using them correctly to avoid injury! If he's in any doubt, most regular gym goers with good bodies are nice peeps who are happy to help or give advice when asked! I have no qualms about approaching a mature woman with a great body in the gym and asking what exercises she did to get it! It's highly flattering! ![]()

Not rude at all its the kind of thing that would usually be posted as a joke. Every cardiovascular section you're just about getting your heart rate up then stopping, wondering to another machine setting it up getting settled then starting again from near resting. It's pointless for fat loss, and pointless for any kind of conditioning. .you're doing 40 mins cardiovascular broken up hugely just do 40 mins on one machine. (Do a different one each day if you like the variety ) The other ones based on the number of reps I'm guessing are all machine based and low weight? That isn't going to really lose you any weight. Get two dumbells of reasonable weight (start with say 5kg and move up a size each week) and YouTube "dumbell thrusters" do them either hiit/tabata style (but this is very difficult ) or just do 3 sets of literally as many as you can till you fail. That will burn way more energy than again all the stop starting.

But diet is a good 90% of the effort.

"Wouldn't mind a bit of advice here guys from those more experienced than myself . I (male half) have always half heartedly worked out on and off all my life but got more serious start of this year (health issues mid life crisis etc.) Wasn't fat to start just wanted to tone, any way, current routine is, 3x 10kg hammer curls with 25 sit ups with 8kg on chest between each rep, 3x 85kg bench press again with the sit ups between reps then 3x 10 hammer curls at 14kg and 3x10kg (each arm) butterflies with 30 straight leg raises in between. Now my problem is I'm getting bigger but I actually am developing a layer of flab, not fat, well yes fat but more flabby fat! How can I loose the flab I didn't have before I started working out ? Does any of this make sense? Oh and I have never claimed I know what I'm doing! Diet hasn't changed other than I no longer snack or pig out in front of t.v. Thanks in advance for advice." Have a look at stronglifts 5x5 is a good Base routine for the large compunds (better get used to squats lol). Your routine is nearly exclusively upper front body, all your big muscles are down your back and below your waist When you use them (such as when squatting) you'll be using vastly more energy plus they really will help your shape more than just curls and benching. Diet will be the main factor in fat gain but if it's a case eof you were eating about the same amount of calories and maintaining size before by building up the other larger groups (glutes, leg, back) and using them you could probably get yourself into a balance where you won't have to cut/alter much of your diet. Best thing is try to cut sugar out or if you really have to have it try to only have it straight after you work out. I used to chug a liter of the 1 quid tesco chocolate milk in the changing room after ^_^ But you're in a good post ion if you want to gain muscle you need a calorie surplus so the fact you're gaining a bit of fat means that you should have the suffice calories to grow nicely when you start. Plus since these muscles are ones you don't normally train you should see results quite quickly for the first month. Stronglifts 5x5 also has a free app that tracks each set the weights automatically increases the weights each session and has videos for each exercise. It's very simple and about the only routine I've been able to stick to because of the simplicity and small number of exercises. Although I do like to add in either wide grip pull ups (I'm a lat whore love the V shape) or dips after a session

"Oh and everyone has results that work for them. Without knowing the other person it's pretty fucking cocky to tell them they're talking shite without knowing anything about them apart from that they train in a different way to you. " Except there's extensive research on the human body, exercise and how the body responds to things. People are not unique snowflakes they are largely the same model human with different trim packages . It's like when people say they do eat less calories than they burn but gain weight. You can either agree with them and celebrate the violation of the laws of thermodynamics and the end of the universe as we know it or you can point out they've made a masitake somewhere in the tabulation.

You are taking core fundamental principles and suggesting that they can only be applied in one way to everyone in every circumstance, body shape, fitness level, metabolism, exercise preference, motivation process and every other variable. And that is either blinkered stupidity, or the level of arrogance which stop people accepting new ideas.

" I'm a bit of a geek about this kind of thing, and I've watched some pretty good seminars from Layne Norton amongst others - physique is roughly 80% diet, 18% training and 2% all that other stuff - meal timing, etc etc. So many people zoom in on that 2% without bothering to get the basics correct and wonder why they aren't getting results. Resistance training should always have some kind of progression built in (increase weight/reps etc). Cardio is good - if you are looking to lose fat HIIT (or circuit traning for us old bastards) has been shown to be most effective. That said, if you are training for a particular sport, you will need to adjust training accordingly.

But some people who successfully train think that what they do is THE way that works for everyone. But it's not. It's so demotivating being told you need to do all this complex, lifestyle altering stuff. When in reality what most people need to do is ease off the alcohol a bit, eat more home cooked food, eat more fruit and veg, stop snacking on stuff they know is bad, and to just start doing a bit more of any type of sport or exercise.

"So hubby wants to loose his belly he does circuit training body weight exercise 3 days a week and trys to do weights in between should he do lighter weights more reps to add the cardio into it or heavier weights and less reps ? If he's already circuit training then there's an element of cardio in that anyway! ![]() ![]() Fat doesnt turn to muscle...ever!! Not sure if serious or troll tbh. Even without knowing the weights that's a pretty messed up routine. And largely pointless Why? And - rude. Not rude at all its the kind of thing that would usually be posted as a joke. Why would that be posted as a joke? I really don't understand your attitude, there are nicer ways of saying you think I'm doing it wrong. You could have said "you may get better results if you try this". Instead you just put me down. It's attitudes like that which make larger people feel uncomfortable about going to the gym, because they feel they will be laughed and sneered at. At least I'm going, I'm exercising enough to get my heart rate up, moving a lot and leaving with a sweat. Anyway, thanks to everyone for the constructive feedback, and the OP for the advice last night. Much appreciated ![]() ![]()

Yeah there's lots of great instructors just cross fit had got quite a bad reputation for putting making money before people's safety/health. If you've got someone good and a reasonably sized group it's not too bad but a large group and someone not on the ball it only takes a moment for you to get a very long lasting injury

"Oh actually I have another question about sit-ups. I had sciatica earlier this year, so lying down on the mat and trying to do sit ups is very painful on the lower back. I've been using one of those dome things (no idea what they're called) and I find it easier that way, but is that the best option? " If you've got the ab machine try that. If your putting your feet under something try doing it without (you use the tendons at the top of your leg when you do this its easier and the way most people are taught but can give bad posture and increase back pain. Otherwise Google bodybuilding . Com abdominal exercises there got a list of over 100 with videos and diagrams so you can find one that works without putting strain on your back. It's going to be a case of trial and error though till you find one that works for you. Bosu ball is the name of the half ball thing your using (stands for both sides up iirc cause you can use both sides of it) if you Google that you'll get a whole raft of exercises that focus on the core.

I'd say concentrate on the aerobic exercises for fitness and health and max calorie expenditure. x

"I've noticed when I do the kettle bells that my left arm is the first to go, need to work up some strength in my arms" What exercises are you doing with the kettle bells? If I assume you are doing swings here are a couple of tips that may help. They might sound obvious 1) make sure you grip is even in both hands. If you are gripping more tightly with one hand you may notice fatigue 2) Concentrate on keeping your shoulders down. Don't let them rise up to your ears. This could prevent after fatigue in your weaker arm If you are doing single arm movements then just be patient. Your less dominant arm will catch up in time ![]()

I did a session with a kettlebell instructor once or twice and apparently my form is fine, but the bits that hurt afterwards are not the bits that are "supposed" to hurt - ie my joints as opposed to my muscles.
