I fancy taking the family to the theatre this weekend to watch something mainstream such as the Lion King.

I spat out my coffee when I saw that face value tickets for a family of four ranges from £325 to £500!

I can afford the tickets but reluctant to spend such a large amount for 2.5 hours on a Sunday!

Have you guys had similar experiences?

I assume that many of these shows are full week in week out and this baffles me.

OW MUCH??? Weekends are normally more expensive and this is a busy time of year, but I am sure there are plenty of shows available that are cheaper than that.

It can ne very expensive but sometimes you can get 2 for 1 tickets.

There are some discounts on various websites but I cannot understand why the lion king is so expensive? Clearly people pay such prices?

I would say that £40 to £50 would be reasonable per ticket.

I'm more inclined to book a decent hotel and do the science museum and other fun family things. I'll mull over it tonight!

Last-minute had tickets on Sunday for £208 for 4 people.

There's quite a lot of discount ticket sellers, especially in Leicester Square.

Restricted view seats always go for cheap on the day.

Check on the internet too as you can combined meal and theatre tickets which often work out at discounted rates.

the leicester square booth is pretty good if youre prepared to be flexible about what you want to see...the museums are really great for kids,you can get tickets that you can get into the natural history and science museum for one cheaper price and will get a lot more than a couple of hours entertainment...if the kids are litle you can do what my dad used to do and take us to hamleys! it was a good couple of years before i twigged it wasn't just a tourist attraction!

Otherwise try a smaller, less well known theatre like The Peacock in Holborn- they are a lot cheaper but still put on really good shows

There is a problem finding stuff that's kids friendly...otherwise I'd say do the National. They have some tickets for as little as a tenner. Their Christmas productions will set you back a bit more - of course - but they always do something family friendly.

As for why the Lion King.....

West End Theatre is driven by the tourist trade. The original Disney film is global so even if you don't understand a word of English, you'll probably know the story and can follow it while just humming along to the songs.
