The Two and a Half Men star will appear on the US show on Tuesday morning to speak to host Matt Lauer.

NBC News announced that it would be a ‘revealing personal announcement’ but didn’t give any further details about what they would be talking about.

The TV appearance comes ahead of the publication of a report by The National Enquirer claiming Sheen is HIV positive and has been hiding his illness for four years."

There are medications that give near 100% safety from HIV infection, but the NHS has not approved them yet, unlike in other countries - including the USA.

It's also possible to be HIV positive but to pose almost no risk to others, where the virus is controlled.

Scaremongering is not good. It can frighten people and deter appropriate action. Take responsibility for yourself and hope that the NHS takes the right decision upon the preventative medication. Providing this is much cheaper than a lifetime of treatment if someone gets infected.

And don't join a hate squad that's based on ignorance.

When this story first surfaced the first name that came to mind was Charlie Sheen. Over the years I've thought why do women go there? I wouldn't touch him with somebody else's bargepole: the man is sleazy.

If it's true and he's been passing it about, I have little sympathy in this case because as I said, the man is sleazy...He was bound to be infected with something!

To be fair Sophie, I think some of the comments about hiv on this thread are really aimed at Charlie sheen specifically, rather than if the headline was about a non celebrity.

He seems to be totally out of control judging by his previous behaviour! The guy is a car crash, which is why the headlines in the mirror, mail,sun,national enquirer seem more believable.

Anybody who gets diagnosed with this terrible disease has my sympathy. I hope my post doesn't come across as judgemental as I know we are all high risk as swingers.

The facts as we know them from the media (not always 100 percent proof but in this case a lot of ethical sources to back it up) is that Charlie is positive, but using the right drugs to make it undetectable so it is very unlikely to be passed on. The rumour mill says he has known for two years so I think he's finally accepted it and got the correct treatment. It's very telling that it was about that time he had a very public breakdown.

His children and there mum have had tests and are negative (thank goodness) other ex partners are also being tested or been tested and apparently he makes regular payments to certain ladies.

I would like to point out though that the main things that put him at risk was not his sexuality (although I've never heard of him being bi just a womanizer) but the fact that he was openly promiscuous, didn't use protection, did drugs and slept with prostitutes.

As I said I don't want to judge, I just hope some good will come out of it by reminding people of the importance not just of using condoms but also to get regular checks. X

He mentioned that he spent 100 of thousands of dollars trying to pay people to keep quiet. People going as low as taking pictures of his medication. As much as his past will haunt him he is a human being who made mistakes in like. We are not robots and some are dealt a card that will change their life...I wish him well on his journey

HIV is an unpleasant condition, that's also been made more so via prejudicial biases as well as past hate mongers etc. I worked with someone who was HIV positive, not knowing until shortly before he died, alongside his partner. He'd been subjected to some awful abuse. Our friends' deaths are a tragic consequence of a situation that has moved somewhat, thank goodness - with people living longer, healthier lives, post infection.

HIV just has negative connotations due to its connection with sex and the relics from our Victorian legacy morality. If it was largely acqui_ed via other routes people living with it wouldn't be so vilified.

I wish Charlie Sheen all the best with his life and feel for him.

Meanwhile, get in support of PrEp preventative treatment being made available via the NHS everyone. We could largely prevent future infections in key target groups. It could also save £billions being spent for HIV treatment, should those people become infected.

Thats pretty much what I heard on an inter_iew with HIVaware on LBC.

She also mentioned like Charlie there are lots people who are infected and cannot pinpoint when it happened & an awful lot of people who are out there undiagnosed.

He's far from perfect, but his imperfections are played out for the world to see, unlike ours.

I know several people who live healthier and happier lives following diagnosis.

The positive results acted as their wake up call and with the correct medication, they are by far and large in a much better place than pre diagnosis.

Hepatitis B is far more infectious than AIDS, it can be deadlier (in extreme cases 24 hrs after being infected!) & it can be contracted through a mere kiss.

I hope none of some of the above 'perfect' citizens are not 'playing away' & bring back home that little present to the hubby/wife & kids - 'very Sheenish'!!

I watched a Stephen Fry documentary some years ago on HIV, it was very uncomfortable _iewing because those who had it talked about such a sense of shame in openly acknowledging their disease because of stigma.

To come out on national television to claim that you've got HIV is brave in my book, whether he felt forced to or not.

the "allegations" being made is that hi was in effect being blackmailed by people to not make it public... and then the national enquier were in effect going to "out him" anyway....

there is no allegation at all that he knowingly passed it on (if it is true he had known for and been treating it for the last 4 years) if he had there would be multi-million dollar lawsuits lined up already

so in effect it does beg the question.... if this had been in the uk, they wouldn't be able to publish it because it isn't in the public interest

but in the us... no such privacy law exists... so did the public really need to know?

What pisses me off with this forum thread is the people giving it the "ooh poor Charlie sheen" routine likes he's a quiet regular bloke!

Wtf! The dick head has been extremely public in his ranting about what a top bloke he is! He did a rambling one man show about it!!!!! He got sacked from 2 and a half men for slagging off the people in charge.

He has/had alcohol addiction and sex addiction both illnesses I believe? ALOT of people have this. Yes it was probably his fault he contracted HIV, but like most people, they probably don't know when or who they got it from. Yes he has done some pretty awful things, but no one is perfect.

The bottom line is the guy was an out-of-control drug and sex addict. Nobody wishes it upon any person to contract a what could be fatal disease. Personally I don't see him as a brave or righteous person he was just ti_ed of paying people to stay quiet. I do think it's morally wrong to sleep with people when you know you have a disease like that and not tell them and at least one person has come forward and said he did do that and I'm sure there's more. As with everything now days I don't think we as the public who are learning this from the media are getting the full unedited story.
