Are these insidious people to blame for all societies ills?

Who are they anyway?

A group of do-gooders bent on silencing fair criticism with ad hominem attacks on anything that differs from their liberal world _iew?

or is it

a smug, knee jerk, ill-defined catch all used by closet bigots to damn anyone who challenges their hatred with the values of respect and common human decency?

OP this is not aimed at you but to the people in real life or online who I have come across it actually incredibly annoys me when people bring up the word "Political Correction" then go on and whinge about it especially when i'm there in a condescending passive aggressive way...

it's like seriously just grow a fucking pair and say what you really don't like and be done with it instead of beating around the bush like a pussy..

I would say they are to blame for many of todays ills. The PC brigade pick the easy option, the one that does not require any manning up, the option that avoids conflict and does 'the right thing' at the time without giving any consideration to the long term consequences of the choices being made.

So you would suggest that toleration and respect is short-term thinking, as oppose to violence and intolerance? Interesting POV, how has that approach worked historically?

"So you would suggest that toleration and respect is short-term thinking, as oppose to violence and intolerance? Interesting POV, how has that approach worked historically?"

I would suggest that by discouraging competitive sports in schools and selling off playing fields in the 90s so that all would be winners has led to us having the most unfit, obese and unhealthy children in Europe.

I would suggest that to assuage the guilt trips that have been consistently laid on us since late 60's we have fed watered and supplied medicines to Africa and the Indian sub-continent. And that as a result we now have a world population pushing 7.5 billion and mass migration from Africa to Europe.

I would further suggest that our unwillingness to take firm military action against tyrants across the globe since the end of WW2 has led us to a position where anyone who has an axe to grind against anyone else sees us as an easy target.

I would suggest that in our mad rush to have an inclusive society where we look for the good in everyone has got us to a place where criminals are seen as victims and the victims of criminals actions are forgotten.

I would finally suggest that in our rush to political correctness we are losing all the things that we really hold dear (but are now afraid to admit we want for fear of being labelled racist, sexist, homophobic or anti any other group

).

For those of you who want a balanced _iew on the pros and cons of this issue, it's the running theme of the latest season of South Park.

To give an over_iew:

PC is good when it removes real barriers for under represented groups. However, that's a very contextual thing and when you remove all context and just apply the raw logic of PC to everything then you end up with "nobody should be ashamed of anything that isn't illegal". This frustrates people who aren't on the extremes of the debate because PC tends to mean the long term consequences of choices are ignored.

For example, someone makes a lifestyle choice that they know to be bad for their health. Then we are all expected to pay for the treatment on the NHS when the inevitable consequences occur. That pisses people off.

Well said. Some people trip over themselves to label people on here in an apparent desperation to appear "right on" without giving thought as to how them labelling others makes them potentially racist sexist homophobic and hypocritical

As View says go with your gut.

Not sure about Pc brigade, but there is certainly a section of the media/social media/politicians who try to shut down any attempt to have an open discussion on things like immigration, by crying racism when voters bring up their fears about unlimited immigration. I don't see how, in a democracy, that is a good thing.

Refusing to bow down to the pc brigade does not make you sexist racist or homophobic. You may well agree with the pc thinking on those issues. It just means you feel they have gone too far telling us what we should or shouldnt think, feel and say. Branding everyone with vile names who doesnt want to take part in activities deemed acceptable by them.

Its gone too far in government in schools in work places and on here...

How many people do you know that start a sentence with " I'm not racist, but..." or "I'm not homophobic, but..." and then continue with some outrageous statement? Being pc doesn't make you extreme or controlling - it simply makes one aware that other people have feelings and a right to live their lives without harassment or bullying - seems quite liberal and caring really and not something to ridicule.

Indeed, without the PC brigade we might still have regular racial attacks and gay bashing, women would stay in the home and we could harass trans people out on the streets for the freaks they are.

Ahhh... the good old days when we were free to punch our privilege into other people's faces. *

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I don't know why its considered 'politically correct' to desire equal treatment for all. If I see someone being treated poorly I'll stick up for them, regardless of sex, creed, colour, or religion, but because I sometimes defend people who others consider different because of their sex, creed, colour, or religion, I'm called a bleeding heart liberal.

Why am I considered 'PC' for being a decent human being?

How can people who defend others from bigoted behaviour be considered taking the easy option? Do you know how hard it is to stand up to people sometimes?

The ones I consider the "pc brigade" and class as going too far are the ones saying if you fly an England flag your racist and will upset immigrants. Or demand christmas decorations say happy holidays so we dont upset other religions. The ones who demand people who come into this country should be protected, not from racial abuse or harrasment EVERYBODY should be free from that regardless. But demand they are protected from normal day to day way of life things that have gone one for centuries without ever upsetting ANYBODY because they are scared 1 solitary over the top IDIOT will take it the wrong way and cry about it. Well if 999 people out of 1000 are happy to say merry christmas then the 1 person who is insulted by it can jump off a fucking cliff for all I care because they are wasting valuable oxygen that the rest of the free world need to breath!!

People call others names if they don't agree with what they say or don't like the subject, be that PC brigade/ bigots/racist /misogynists etc

It is a shame as it just spoils discussion ( not just on here )as people get irate when others opinions differ. Even the most reasoned arguments are lost in the middle.

Yes, this was supposed to be the point of the thread.

When making reasonable, thought out arguments we've often noticed people being insulted by this term - in the same way as "racist" can sometimes be thrown in the other direction.

We are happy and confident in being liberal, wordly people who think all human lives have value (and that political correctness is a compliment not an insult) - but we always say Happy Christmas, are patriotic and are not usually insulted by the English flag

This..

It's the usual bollocks chuck away term to try and stifle those who challenge some of kid above and if some of the above only learnt to express themselves with a bit of thought to what effects their language had no others then they may not need to be challenged but some just love it.

Part of their insecurity and a need to blame someone for their own lack of whatever..

The examples you give are nothing to do with being politically correct, they are a consequence of unthinking stupidity. Unfortunately such stupidity is not restricted to a small minority of the pc brigade. It is just as prevalent, if not more so, in the bigoted, racist and ignorant sections of society.

"The ones I consider the "pc brigade" and class as going too far are the ones saying if you fly an England flag your racist and will upset immigrants. "

Does that happen? Many public buildings fly the St George Cross and/or union jack. Many pubs will have the flag for sporting occasions. People have them on their cars and homes. So who is asking for it to be banned and when? And as many immigrants, the Irish in particular, but also many, many others proudly fly their flags who is being offended?

"Or demand christmas decorations say happy holidays so we don't upset other religions. "

Again does that happen? There are always storie but pretty much every town and city hads christmas lights and decorations, many have christmas markets, shops are decorated, santa is still in every shopping centre. So ho is Christmas being banned? And in cases like Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, is it really wrong that something incorporates Christmas and is enjoyed by people of all faiths and religions?

"The ones who demand people who come into this country should be protected, not from racial abuse or harrasment EVERYBODY should be free from that regardless. I've read this several times but still not sure what you mean. Who is being offended by what in this impressively vague hypothetical scenario?

"

I would finally suggest that in our rush to political correctness we are losing all the things that we really hold dear (but are now afraid to admit we want for fear of being labelled racist, sexist, homophobic or anti any other group

)."

Sigh. School playing fields are sold off for the money, not for some weird "let's not do sports" PC attitude.

And instead of supporting victims of famine we should what, let them die in case they survive and want to come and make a better life for themselves? What a lovely idea.

The idea that criminals are seen as victims is just made up Daily Mail nonsense. We live in a country where criminals are heavily punished still. Compare to a country like Norway, where they actually rehabilitate criminals (and it works).

Unwillingness to take action against tyrants...we're sti reaping the repercussions for what we did in Iraq against Saddam. I dont know if that was the right thing to do or not, but the idea that being more aggressive in our foreign policy protects us is laughably naive.

Those aside, brilliant criticism of the terrible, bogeyman "PC brigade"

I'm in no PC society, nor know of any PC law.

But I do hold respect for others and always have done. Some may _iew people who have and expect respect to be PC - I have no clue. They bleat about PC this or that and are unintelligible.

I think though that some people have become like dinosaurs and are at risk of being outpaced by society that is uninterested in the befuddled, the outraged and the intolerant. I think there are people who expect the world to change to accommodate them, rather than accepting change and welcoming opportunity. I think that bigots are also trying to pass the blame onto others - they dislike the intolerance that others have for their own bigoted intolerance.

That's all well and good but what happens when PC do gooder intentions end up allowing bad to happen. As in the cases of the asian paedophile grooming gangs getting away with what they did for so long in Rochdale and Rotherham because the authorities were afraid to act for fear of being called "racist". As of midnight Sky news reported that at least 2 of the attackers are now known to have travelled back into France from Syria posing as refugees and hiding in amongst the refugees. It's also on the front page of the daily star tomorrow one of them was saved from a sinking boat full of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, registered as a refugee in Greece before travelling along the refugee migrant routes into France. What was that you were saying about 2 and 2 not adding upto 4 on the other thread?

point is however we accept responsibility that there were certain members of the asian community who were in gangs and carrying out sick crimes of grooming young girls that is without a doubt...

what I don't get is the hypocrisy is that when anyone else does it hardly anyone blinks an eye or gives a shit..

yet if a couple of sick minded asian lads round the country in a few gangs do it everyone is suddenly up in arms with fire and pitch forks..

if anything there was a fail in the system too in apprehending those types who commit those crimes who were not only asian but other groups as well.

You keep rehashing the same old rubbish.

Do you understand what good means? Doing good does not mean allowing child abuse except in the warped minds of certain people.

Secondly, you were the one going on about 2 and 2 making or not making 4, not me - try to get at least that right. If you bothered to read what I wrote, I said wait until the evidence comes in from the French police and don't jump to conclusions. That should be an easy enough to understand.

Meanwhile the Sky News report available on-line at 02:10 today at http://news.sky.com/story/1588193/police-let-fugitive-suspect-go-after-attacks has a video which clearly states it's not known whether the Syrian passport found was real or fake. In the description of the journey of the passport holder they use the word 'may' 5 or 6 times because they are not sure about the connection with the actual terrorist. There's a one month gap in the time line between the passport user entering Hungary and the terror attack.

Trey to look at the evidence objectively.

I'd describe allowing paedophile gangs to get away with their crimes as doing bad whatever the colour or religion of the offender or the child. As a do-gooder I'd expect the authorities to do their job in terms of child protection. You have a distorted _iew of what doing good means possibly because you've got so used to trying to use it as an insult you've forgotten what the words actually mean.

They were allowed to get away with it for as long as they did because of political correctness, that is the whole point. Bad sometimes ends up happening because of the 'do gooder' attitute. Your _iew is distorted if you cannot accept and acknowledge that.

Also another point to pick with you from the other thread which filled up on the Paris attackers posing as refugees to gain access into France.

I'm afraid you keep rehashing the same old rubbish too. I did read what you wrote it's a shame you don't actually read what I've written either, I wasn't 'jumping to conclusions' just saying what itv news reported 2 days ago, and what was on the front page of several newspapers yesterday, now sky news are going with it, but that still doesn't seem 'official' enough for some people on here.

Looking at the evidence objectively is a two way street but you seem to want to continue to bury your head in the sand and ignore the evidence as it piles up day after day. That's what police do they look at the available evidence and then come to a rational conclusion based on that evidence even when they sometimes don't have a full picture of exactly what happened.

"I'm not reading the contributions as they will probably annoy me.

As the wonderful Clive Stafford Smith says, I'd rather be a do-gooder than a do-badder.

Proud to be...

PC Lickety

That's all well and good but what happens when PC do gooder intentions end up allowing bad to happen. As in the cases of the asian paedophile grooming gangs getting away with what they did for so long in Rochdale and Rotherham because the authorities were afraid to act for fear of being called "racist". Well it's good to see you admitting in writing at long last that you are rehashing rubbish. So all that stuff you wrote yesterday about 2 plus 2 making 4 wasn't about how you, ahead of the police, had come to a conclusion that links the passport to a terrorist? And yet this morning at 8 am news broadcasts are saying the police are still investigating the provenance of the passport. Thankfully they seem to be doing their job and investigating rather than jumping to conclusions. You could learn from them.

There you go centaur ... Now the police have confirmed that one of the terrorists came in via leros though they still have not connected him with the passport.
