Who loves the dentist then?

Rotherham

Just got back from the dentist. Had to have a tooth out and a repair to a filling, and what a barrel of laughs it was. I now currently feel like I've had a stroke. Good job I don't have a fear of them otherwise it would have been an absolute nightmare!

So what's everyone's thoughts on dentists then?

I might sound odd but i actually enjoy it, having regular check ups plus brushing and flossing twice a day should help prevent anything major.

Only seen the hygienist once in last 2 years as they say my oral health is excellent

Mine are generally fine. I just wished I looked after them better when I was younger. I'm happy they visually still look alright.

I'm also happy to go for regular check-ups also.

I'm not keen but it's a necessary evil. Lots of us who were born in the fifties had parents who lived through sugar rationing and compensated for it on their kids.

I miss my dentist in the US. He was amazing.

My dentist here is alright. She gets the job done, but I always feel she is just doing as little as possible to get me out...

I'm not a fan, though a school friend is one and has been mine for a few years but switched to a new one this week.

A lot of people I know pay for scale and polishing, when this is included in the standard NHS fee for a check-up. Be wary of them doing this! Does yours?

Its a mix of myth and fact. We don't all have great teeth, but our teeth are generally better than British teeth

I never missed my appointments. I've been to the dentist more often than my GP, as an adult.

Had some work done when I was 16, think dentist was a fan of marathon man... I was butchered over a period of time and couldn't set foot in a dental surgery for years. When I did finally crop up the courage to ignore the sweats and the panic and go through the door I promptly passed out.

It has taken the best part of 30 years to be able to walk into the dentist without fighting the panic but I still find it difficult

I LOVE the dentist. Everything about it. The smell the taste of the latex gloves in my mouth. Having them poked about with a metal stick to the mouthwash stuff at the end. A love it. I wouldn't even complain of the price went up.

My Dentist is lovely. When I had a re-route canal done by him it was almost as if he flipped a switch in my mouth and turned the pain off. It was such a relief I felt like buying him dinner.

I got Through the panic stage when I was in my mid 20,s, haveing good dentists, but stepping down from private to nhs I can see what I payed for before but I don,t regret the change, its not one I wanted to make but times change and Sometimes its wise if you can change with them, my nhs dentist goes around my mouth like a mad rally driver, asking at the same time if I,m all right, with blood dribbling down my chops, when he finish,s he says to me Take a rinse, even thou I,m pretty up For it all there is always a sense of Relief when he,s finished, parting with The cash don,t help much either..

I absolutely hate going to the dentist. My hubby didn't go for 25 years until last year as he was terrified of them. He was very lucky and didn't have to have any work done to his teeth. He realises how lucky he is and now goes to the dentist every 6 months and hygienist every 6 months.

I feel like I've had a massage, after being to the dentist!

I LOVE it. The chemicals, the noises of the tools, the rubber glove jammed in my mouth so I don't have to speak to anyone, the pink rinse at the end, the lovely polishes and pastes! It's orgasmic.

I HATE the hairdresser. Sitting in front of a big mirror for three hours, making small talk. Purgatory.

Xxx

At the moment, I am living in Pattaya, Thailand, for the Winter.

Called into my Dentist, on Thursday to book a Hygienist appointment.

Got a same day appointment, which is not unusual here.

Job done £10.

I go to my dentist approximately every 4 weeks for 'adjustments',,a treatment plan over two years costing £4000 but,,,,,I definitely know where that £4000 went,,,,for example, when I first went to him for an extraction, instead of an injection he just rubbed some stuff on my gum,,,,feeling no pain for hours afterwards and no droopy face, swollen tongue feelings either,,,,my teeth used to look like a chimps teeth or something dug up by archaeologists,,,,he has straightened and whitened them,by the time the treatment plan is over I will be a beautiful 50 year old (well,,a beautiful smile at least),,it all really is an case of getting what you pay for.

This is in no way meant as a criticism of nhs dentistry or the NHS in general,,but resources have to be allocated and it is an expensive business,,,,that is where the idea of Americans having perfect pearly whites comes from,,,USA just is a more affluent country in many ways.Any dentist that stays in Britain working to save the teeth of our children when they could be in L.A. earning big bucks for fixing up the smiles of the rich and famous, deserves a medal.

My dentist is pretty darn dishy too,,,,that helps.

I hasnt been to the dentist in over ten years after a particulary nasty incident with a wisdom tooth. My fear is irrational. I know it is but it's also very real.

I have a rotten tooth which causes me to have a recurring abscess. The abscess causes all sorts of illnesses and I have been hospitalised more than once the last time with Acute Necrotising Ulcerative something or other (trench mouth). On top of this, I over compensate by cleaning my teeth lots which apparently causes issues!

They treat the infection and tell me to come back but I very rarely do.

I went in the summer as my doctor refused to prescribe anti biotics again and I managed to sit through a partial polish. I was supposed to go back for a filling and they agreed to sedate me for the rotten tooth extraction but I never went.

Reading this back it looks and makes me feel stupid and very emotional. I know I have to go. I just can't...

My friend is also terrified. She is currently pregnant so gets free treatment but still won't go. We offered to hold her hand & she cried x

According to QI (so its almost irrefutable), the British have the healthiest teeth in the world. Something to do with the NHS treatments being free when your a child I believe. People won't believe it, but Mr Fry said so. So there!
