I have been self employed most of my working life and yes i take it for granted, i am lucky that in that i have been successful and traded at a profit in these hard times, sometimes years have not been easy some years have been good but on the whole would i put in the hours and paperwork working for some one else .........NO NO NO.

I wonder if folks out there ponder on taking the plunge and going it alone and what would you sell or provide a service to make profit ???.

Would i do it again in these times to be honest ..... NO

Here are a few pointers to make money...Sex..Cigarettes..Booze..Petrol..MOT stations..

Striding to make that plunge takes guts tenacity a will to think today will be different...... IS THAT YOU ....if not stay in your 9.....5 job with a pay packet.

Been self employed like the op for 30 years now . Also been lucky , but it's bloody hard work , long hours and a huge responsibility .

But no, to answer the question. I'd rather work with a recognised global company in a decent position. It's easier to earn money with less responsibilities (despite my CEO telling me to consider my territory my "franchise").

I managed a team of 40+ in my old MD's absence, and it wasn't enjoyable either. I prefer my current role.

I'm just waiting to get laid off so I can take the plunge... Fingers crossed for early next year, not that I don't enjoy my job, I do. I just know I'll never get the balls to make the leap without having redundancy money behind me..

Done self employed work before but prefer employment as it's easier and a clearer benefit package with security. Arguably I'd say it's better profitability as well, particularly in fields I enjoy working within.

NO NO NO..... accountants do nothing that you can do your self, self assesment is no problem you can go on to gov .com and they will tell you what you can claim for and not.

Don't be fooled that an accountant is a foot in the tax mans door.

Done it,run a company with my ex. Didn't like having to use strong arm tactics with the contractors who didn't want to pay up so shut it down. Earned quite a bit of money too.

The new laws have changed in the county court......just get the county sherriffs involved.....costs an extra £80.00 but they get results....happy days xx.

I've never had the desire to be self employed. Even with my law degree in the US, people tried to convince me to hang a shingle up, but I don't have any passion for it. I like working in jobs where I can make a difference as part of a team with diverse but complimentary qualifications and expertise.

No. I can use my JD to take the bar here, but I would still have to take and pass the UK bar (which is expensive) before I could practice.

I have been self employed before and do not want the 24 hour responsibility again. I have a full time job that occupies all of my time and a pension to look forward to that I would not have been able to afford in the past.

If you're a straight forward business and have good record keeping there's nothing to fear from self-assessment and you don't need an accountant. Anything bigger and yes, you do.

I've never wanted to work for myself. I don't have a good business idea anyway, but I like working towards something bigger and better than just the money that goes in my own pocket or a shareholder's pocket.

My OH runs his own business and has done so for many years, he works very hard and long hours and works away a lot too.

I am employed primarily in the public sector but I also run my own small business along with my son. It is still young in that we started it in April and up to now we have been really busy. I hope for a rest in December.

I work part time and run a business part time. I would love to do my business full time but worried that if I did I would have to rely on my business income which has busy times and quiet times. Also worried as wouldn't get holiday or sick pay hence keeping my other job going

I have several backgrounds and hoping to broaden my knowledge in one or two of them next year.

Only downside I can see working for yourself, is when you phone in sick you know you are lying lol.

for many years I compemised and worked as a contractor, so semi self employed. my services require big businesses 1000 employees minimum really so it got harder and harder to get satisfaction from it.

Now I am semi retired, organise a few events a year for 700 to 1000 people sort of size so quite busy but not 24/7 plus I get to go to my own parties

We had our own catering business for 15 years, no holiday pay,no sick pay and the biggest headache STAFF!! now i am a chef, our business gave us a good standard of living but would not go back
