Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I was at a funeral yesterday where the church was so full that the few to arrive had to stand.

It made me think about who would turn up for my funeral. I doubt I'd fill a third of the church.

I know lots of people but very few are close.

Would you have a brimming church/crematorium or just a handful?

As few as possible.

Handful of people I think, I could be wrong! But then probably depend where the wake is, I've got a lot of 'pub friends' if the wake was at my local probably a lot more will turn up!

More so if there is karaoke on offer!

Karaoke at a wake sounds like fun. We just offered cake.

Mine is planned. It's one less worry for my family when there is so much to do.

I organised a wake once at my old job, for a young man, over 400 people came and it was the oddest wake I've ever organised!!

Mc's everywhere, drum and base music pounding, shots being drank, it was just how he would have wanted it

Perhaps, but it's a huge waste of money. I'd rather leave money to them for something useful instead of a macabre ceremony.

Had a conversation with Mrsdpt and my mum about funerals and what we'd want.

My mum- I want a happy send off, colourful and happy songs no miserableness and moping about.

Mrsdpt - I want it to be the worst day of your life. I want you all crying and sad

Me - what about when George dies? (Our sausage dog)

To which my mum replies. For god sake! Don't talk about the dog dying!

Apparently her eldest son and future daughter in law is fine, but for fuck sake don't talk about the dog dying

If it was anything like the evening do at our wedding it was packed to the rafters so I guess it will be full, although they will be more bothered about the party afterwards

no matter

It is something to think about..

My ole man would have a church full he knows so many people and is popular in his life.

I think for me just a select few. The kids and a couple of work mates maybe.

I am reclusive and have very few friends just internet people mostly that dont know the real me.

Think its crem for me.. My son will take my ashes in little bags and scatter me all over the world as he travels.

We had a live music event for a friend. Musicians and performers travelled from far and wide and it was fantastic. Just the sort of party our friend would have thrown.

I think we're pretty much the same. The dog takes precedence.

I dunno some friends mostly family. I'd actually probably fill more of a church if someone told fabs lol.

Although given how bitchy the ts community is that may make for an interesting funeral.

Also my life is very compartmentalised so it would be both worrying and iteresting to see how people who have totally different ideas of me and knowledge of my life meet.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I'll be having a funeral pyre, with professional mourners and a good selection of grieving friends and relatives. Anyone who wants to throw themselves on to the fire are welcome to.

If I died tomorrow I can imagine there would be a big turnout because I work across a few teams at work and there would be a lot of people who would feel expected to be there since I'm quite young.

If I go in old age (which I hope I will) then it will be small as I only have a small family and relatively small group of friends.

My mum has planned all of her funeral out (and my dad's for him, because he didn't seem interested) - she reminds me where the folder with all the instructions is kept every time she goes anywhere on a plane. I can't remember what's on the list apart from wear colours and sing Abide With Me.

A small send off would be my preference

In my life, I have secured a handful of close friends

I have never been one for acquaintances or hangers on

I do not socialise with those I work with, nor do I have any wish to

I know FB is a poor measure but, as an example, my friends on there number in the late teens despite having had a profile on there for 3 years or so

I know people who have friends into the thousands. That just doesn't equate to me.

That's one of the wonderful things about a funeral. When all the different bits of your life come together and the people you leave behind find out odd things about you.

At one funeral I know of, an entire other family (divorced but never mentioned to the children of his second marriage, who believed their mother was the first and only).

I think two friends in the real world equates to about 1,000 you've never met on FB. I know which I would prefer.

Hopefully, your son will send a text to everyone on your phone so we'll find out that way.

Assuming I died before my siblings, cousins and their offspring the crematorium would be jammed. We come in bulk. That's without the masses of inlaws, childhood friends, friends of the family and neighbours. There will be a pew of sobbing men at the back who no one will know.

Central

It depends when it happens. My life has had a full church as well as just a handful. I've not much clue about the future in that sense and how old I'll be.

I've got an overseas trip and wake/party laid on for a small number. I'd prefer that to a stale church etc, as an atheist. Have as much of the party before you die as you can. If you're loved by those who are important to you, that's all that matters - whether it's your partner, your pets or millions.
