Most underrated band's of the 80's

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

When people talk about the 80's it's always queen, Duran Duran, culture club and so on that get a mention.

But what about band's that seem to be forgotten but made some cracking song's?

Although by the mid 80's I had pretty much stopped listening to mainstream stuff in favour of hip hop and electro (yup I is old)

The odd band or song I enjoyed.

Always liked OMD, the maid of orleans.

Big country. Chance.

Mr mister. Only had one album, then a greatest hits for some reason, but the album is awesome

I'd say Bronski Beat - especially Smalltown Boy because it's such a powerful song. And Yazoo made some good songs while they lasted.

I wouldn't say Queen were an 80's band, they were a 70's band that survived the 80's.

The cure, new order, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, the cult, Flock of Seagulls, heaven 17, Madness, Adam Ant, curiosity killed the cat, cameo, Thompson Twins, The Jam, The specials, U2, Bon Jovi, blow monkeys, squeeze, the bangles, Freddie Jackson, Wham, inxs, tears for fears, eurythmics, the police, All great bands for different reasons. Dig out those NOW albums people, look at all the good music you've forgotten.

Happy times.

Met the band after and got them to autograph my arm. Having a bath and trying to keep my arm out of the water was a bloody nightmare

Oh yes, his ethereal, androgynous singing voice had a truly beautiful quality, I always attempt to copy it whenever I sing Scritti Politti - also check out 'Sugar and Spice', and unusually funky number with a distinctly cheeky tone to the music.

I also want to mention Baltimora, most people only know Tarzan Boy, but they put out many songs which where vastly better, yet got next to no recognition

The Smiths were my favourite underated band of the 80's I suppose. They were a marmite band, people who just didnt get it wrote them off saying they were depressing etc but it was irony and a big piss take mostly. Morrissey and Marr - musical geniuses.

"Motley Crue"

My mate did the stage set for Mötley Crüe on their "Final Tour" gig last week, I asked him to bring me some Girls, Girls,Girls back

I'll chuck Prefab Sprout into the mix as I was not far from Albuquerque when the King Of Rock'n'Roll was released

Was cream around in the 80s? Eric Clapton went solo around then I think, but I don't know if cream were in the charts

A lot of the bands named are massive! I only recently discovered Carter the Unstoppable sex machine! Love their stuff! But that might be classed as early nineties?

"I got into 80s bands after the fact; formative music yearswuse for me is the 90s but I have (re?)discovered The Go-Betweens and The Cocteau Twins are they are both magnificent."

I was waiting for someone to mention The Go Betweens.16 Lovers Lane and Tallulah still sound good today.

"The Alarm

I saw them live too

Me too they were a local band I worked at a fee of their gigs

Wow, I think I fancied Dave ?"

Saw the Alarm supporting the Jam - that was a top gig! also the Cult back when they were Southern Death Cult. Anyone remember Spear of Destiny? Bauhaus? Icicle Works? Jesus & Mary Chain?

Have you seen Mr Marr up in your hometown on his recent tours?

Also, do they still do the Manchester versus Cancer gig up there?

I went to the first one at the MEN arena, stayed in Salford, got pics outside the boys club etc and even got a set list which i treasure to this day!

James are most definitely an eighties band, form in 82. One of my favourite bands and massively underrated. I first saw them live in 1992 at Alton Towers.

They are rumoured to be supporting the Stone Roses next June and I've already got my tickets.

Other underrated bands imv are:

Neds Atomic Dustbin

Jesus Jones - Liquidator is still one of my favourite albums

The KLF

Carter USM

Ride

Cud

Wonderstuff

Pixies

Inspiral Carpets

The late 80s was a great time for music.

Tears for fears I don't think get the credit they deserve for lyrical content!!

Mad World

Shout

Everybody wants to rule the world

sewing the seeds.

Also Dexys and eurythmics even though they had there successes are sometime forgotten. But my honest opinion is the 80's music was shit compared to the music produced in the 60's and 70's.
