Not sure that you'd get away with this but in the 60s when my dad worked in a hospital, he'd bring home bags of blood and feed it to our tomatoe plants

This year my husband and I grew potatoes, pumpkins for Halloween. Tomatoes, strawberries, pea pods, and have different fruit trees planted. We have a herb garden too so don't need to buy them.

I made jam with the strawberries, pies and chutney with the apples and ate the rest as you would normally. Our neighbour grows fruit and veg too so we swapped some things with them and got lovely Victoria plums. The taste is well worth the effort.

in the suffolk countryside

look up permaculture techniques

efficient even for a small space and companion planting is also something to look into..

bill morrison does excellent books on the subject..

a net cage is the best, keeps all the birds and butterflies and rabbits out..

grown food since i was a kid..its easy as long as you keep your seedlings and plants safe from those that like to eat them too..

I used to grow all kinds of things when I was with my X bf. Chillies, peppers, courgettes, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes, herbs, lettuce. All in various pots on the patio. Had to be quick if any were OK to pick because my bulldog would quite happily go outside and pick his own. He was a bugger for the strawberries

I'm not wonderful but yes, I do.

Sorry if I'm repeating previous advice. It depends what you grow and how much space you have but even a windowsill can be used to grow rocket.

Sweet corn is easy.

Radish dead easy so is beetroot.

Just plant them and leave them to it.

Potatoes are easy to grow, just have to choose one of the methods and try out which one works for you. I plant potatoes in a bag then add more soil as they grow and cover up the green shoots each time. Children love tipping them out and finding the potatoes.

What kind of soil have you got and what do you eat most of?

If you eat a lot of salad I recommend rocket, pea shoots etc. the stuff that costs the most to buy but is really cheap and easy to grow in pots. Cats cause the most damage by digging stuff up and weeing and pooing we put short but visible sticks in the ground close enough together to prevent ours doing it.

As your garden is big you could grow the more expensive greens like cavolo nero or have lovely new potatoes and broad beans in early summer and don't forget runner beans.

My favourite gardening book is a Dorling Kindersley "Grow All You Can Eat in Three Square Feet" it's really well laid out.

"Yes we do, and nothing better than home grown. Can supply a county with green beans lol.

Green beans and spring onions ar easy to grow. Never grown butter nut squash and failed with mushrooms every time I tried .

If your going to do it work out where your going to plant , and get the killer down now to make sure ground is good, mark out the area with a. Piece of string I would not even turn the soil first for the first season

Plant potatoes first next year , just dig a hole best you can in rock hard soil, and plant it . Don't worry about how it looks if worse comes to the worse dig a hole with a tent peg

This year just do potatoes , as s come up around them quick spray with killer.

When you dig the potatoes up , you will have lovely loose sexy soil for next season .

When you dig them up remove all the roots of you can get some horse shit , make sure it's well rotted and not full of seeds, otherwise you will be ing all next year .

Don't put horse shit down If you want to grow carrots

Tomatoes you bung in a grow bag, strawberries can go in a trough .

If you get some raspberry, black currant red currant , Logan berry ( best thing ever to go in your mouth) they can be grown in a big pot, but maintenance free in the ground space them out nicely , can mix in with your flower border very nicely . Put down a blanket ,and then stones . Looks very effective . And practically maintenance free

It's a bit of a bodge way to start your veggie patch , but will make life easy in the long run.

I would avoid pots, I won't be doing loads of pots this year

Best thing you can ever do is invest in decent gardening tools , killer , and a couple of water butts , if you don't have an outside tap , saves a lot of walking . I would get a garden waste bin rather than a compost heap as if you decide to stop gardening , you will have a compost heap still

You can get loads of gardening stuff tools water butts even plants etc from free cycle or other type of place

I will ask people if they are splitting plants and can I have some, also I will buy the reduced plants from the stores .

remember gardening can get out of control, and turn into a very expensive hobby , along with looking rubbish .

See if you know someone who is a professional gardener , who can give you advice , and not take on too much . And make sure you do your gardening little and often , or go for non maintenance planting

Careful with the runner beans, each bean can produce a kilo of runner beans. Only discovered this when I planted the whole pack of 20.
