Hiya Everyone!

So, there are sooo many things about which humans have so much to learn. So many things that we just don't know about.

My question is, if you could choose ONE thing to know that we don't already know, what would you choose? Is it the beginning of life? What happens after death? What is dark matter? How quantum theory really works, in full?

What would you like to know?

* The beginning of life - need more info

* After death - nothing, imo

* Dark matter - again my opinion is that we've misunderstood something fundamental about the nature of the universe and we're attempting to fit what we see with what we think we know. Maybe we just don't know

* Quantum theory? That's a whole 'nother post in itself

Just in case you think I'm getting too big for my boots, I keep this pinned up next to my computer:

.

"If you aren't certain about things, if your mind is still open enough to question what you are seeing, you tend to look at the world with great care, and out of that watchfulness come the possibility of seeing something that no-one else has seen before.

You have to be willing to admit that you don;t have all the answers.

If you think you do, you will never have anything important to say"

It'd be amazing if we really did have a purpose.

I don't like that sentiment myself sorry lol, that we are the universe in some way. We're really diverse, similar in some ways yet very different in others. We don't know what is fucked up and what isn't, no idea what is right or wrong because there's so many options and there's no such thing as natural. Everything is just presumed, based on so called rational thought. We don't know how we got here, or when, or why. We know shit when we think about it. Although we all have our own set of beliefs about everything, nobody knows if they're true or not.

Even our feelings are chemical reactions that can be brought about by lies or faked.

I've always said - there's no problem on the planet that can't be solved by throwing a huge amount of money at it.

Look at Ebola.

The faint possibility that white people might become contaminated was the catalyst for pouring resources in to combating the disease and finding several cures within 6 months.

Money.

Although you might be pissing in the wind on the common cold.

Space and time are components of the same thing, to start with. You need to think of them as aspects of the other.

And to answer why space time and matter exist (ie 'why is there something and not nothing?') you need a basic understanding of quantum mechanics.

Descartes was shit at this though. He also took God as the reason for believing things other than the self exist. How he proved the existence of God is something other philosophical skeptics have yet to figure out.

I'm not sure it can be considered gambling if you have the winning numbers, it's more of an unbelievably good return on investment.

I see your point.

But how would you know them? Time travel? The hypothesis of time travel says that knowing the future changes the future so you couldn't guarantee the correct numbers... Still a gamble"

You can only travel in to *forwards* from the point in time after which the time machine was created. Going backwards isn't permitted byt he laws of physics, as I understand them.

And also the amount of energy required is prohibitive...

BUT

If you could do all that and travel forwards in time and get the winning lottery numbers for next week, I'd say you were very clever and should put your energies somewhere more useful.

"I want to know why everything exists.

Because it just does....

Changing my question to: does anything exist, and if so what.

Interesting...

Now we're back to Descartes and the idea that the only truly knowable thing we can be certain of is out own consciousness.

But that's a bit of a cop out - there has to be more.

If i know what exists i can work out the why for myself.

Not even sure my own conscious can be relied on as real.

It may not be reliable and what we think we see may not be real but that we think is undeniable "

I'm not sure any more. Like i said so much can be faked, and it seems lies are so much more believable, even comforting, than the truth.

I would like to know why (child related)

A) they don't listen to their parents when given advice but someone of the same age as them can say the same thing and suddenly it all makes sense!

B) why when you ask them to do a job, the arms swing and 'it's not fair' comes out their gob despite a rota system

And C) how much washing can three kids make in a day?! When they don't change!!!

They just need someone else to confirm something for them, someone they can relate to is best (following the herd mentality).

"B) why when you ask them to do a job, the arms swing and 'it's not fair' comes out their gob despite a rota system "

They don't know the meaning of fair.

Oh dear.

Arguably quite late to start training.

Bribery and blackmail are probably the strongest weapons in your armoury.

Try to separate them, get one to do stuff and over-praise/shower with pressies.

Do that enough and the others will get the idea?

Maybe

It was, you said it was a hard one to answer. Wasn't that the point of the thread, questions that we would like to know but are unlikely to?

Two things:

1/ I said tricky, unless yr planning suicide

2/ As already covered, there are plenty of things we will just never know the answer to

"Hiya Everyone!

I'd like to know what my future holds. That includes any health problems for me and loved ones, will I settle down and marry, will my son be a successful businessman and when will I die.

I want to know if a tree falls and no one is around to see it fall does it make a sound?

When I leave a room and walk away how do I know for sure you continue to exist and is there any truth in the theory that on a crowded street 1 in 10 people you pass is only an echo of another time

And my big 1 is how do we know for sure that we all see the same? Is how we see colours really the same for everyone or is my blue your red?

I guess I'd like to know if there's really a god and if there's a heaven/hell!

If there IS a god - and he's the narrow, vengeful God of the Old Testament - then I'm going to hell! That bothers me at times - because apart from my super-high sex drive and my sexual experiences with lots of people I'd say I'm a pretty nice person!

All parents will understand!

Train the little buggers better!

Good luck their all yours... Did you want grey hairs?!

FI you can train a dog you can train a child, I always say.

How old are they?

I'm a middle child and I'm always right too

As the youngest child, I roll my eyes at you

That's because you can't stand the fact I'm always right

Whatever. I'm the youngest so I'm pampered and loved by mom and dad. I don't need to be right. "

maybe he just took references from the bible or whatever or added it? either way I'm glad I purchased the book

Three questions I ponder regularly is, how will I live my life?

How will I die my death?

And will I be remembered after everyone who will ever know me is dead?

Question one is unanswerable because it changes like the tides

Question two is unanswerable because it is not foreseeable

Question three is unanswerable because I'm not dead yet

Such cheerful questions, but anything else I want to ask, someone will have an answer for or is a question of opinion, even if there is an answer that hasn't been found yet

Ah, now we're straying in to realms of free speech, which is a whole 'nother ball game...

When it comes to good sources...

* who wrote it?

* what's their angle?

* what are their sources?

* Is it the official site of an official organisation that is well respected?

* is the domain name is appropriate to the information you seek: .edu, .gov, and .org sites are usually more appropriate than .com sites.

* do many other web pages point to this site?

* is it is clear who has written the entry, the person has appropriate credentials, and it seems recent enough?

* Is the site is updated regularly and do links to other sites work?

&c &c

Also, reputation means nothing and false info can be accidently passed on, as well as purposefully.

Anything. You don't need an example.

Most of the questions in here could be examples.

I've seen an alien. Is that true? First you need to know what i mean by alien, this is the first hurdle where truth fails for most people.

I'm not sure I follow - are you saying that we cannot be sure of *anything* because of language?

What's your question, or line of questioning?

Language makes it so you can manipulate the 'truth'. Words have meanings, often more than one, they also have connotations. Add onto this that people like to use confirmation bias and we have some very confusing truths flying around, well they're more beliefs aren't they.

But i wanna apply that to everything.

You cannot know what's the truth, it's not possible. There really isn't any truth that exist. It's all presumption and how you perceive anything.

Labels can help us discuss things, the sky is blue for example, but it also holds us back, the sky is more than blue but that's what we see, we perceive, and so we will label it as such.

I'm shit at explaining.

Words are for communication purposes, the Sky wasn't called the sky until we named it, it just was, that's the same for everything. Can you look at the sky with fresh eyes, no name or thoughts, just see it?

Exactly. Does anyone even look at anything as it is?

Would that even be the truth if they did? I feel it would be the closest thing to it.

How many series' did Mulder & Scully spend trying to find the truth?

9 seasons, plus some spin-offs.

What makes you think we can find it here, in 175 posts or less?
