Birthday Help!

It's my sisters birthday is this month. Her dad is loaded, so there's no point me giving her cash because she can just ask the bank of dad. I can't get her anything expensive (on my budget), because it will still be insignificant against what other people will be getting her. So I guess it has to be something personal :-/ but I'm completely stuck for ideas! Please help

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

Isn't there an irony in asking a bunch of strangers for something personal for someone we don't know?

Does she have any hobbies? What are her interests?

Depends on what sort of stuff your sister likes and what budget you have in mind.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

My sister had calendars made using family photos for Xmas last year. I don't think it was expensive.

Yep! I realise the irony. But I mean more like suggestions than actual things. I didn't grow up with her and she now lives 250 miles away in boarding school so it's a bit tricky to think of things that we share. I'm thinking things like hand made cards and bracelets but not quite as crap and uninventive (is that even a word?) as that. If that makes any sense at all

If she's got an iPad you can get covers made using lots of your/her favourite photos. She will think of you every time she uses it. Very personal

She may well have a new one by now. The last one got smashed when she did a hand stand and it fell out of her blazer pocket... oops

You could make her a book. It's pretty easy, you just fill it with little tags with notes written on them that are personal to her. They can be memories or quotes or stuff you've shared.

You could make it easier for yourself and just buy a nice notebook and make pockets in the pages to stuff the tags/cards in (get one with thick pages) and then get coloured card to Mage the tags. I make them with luggage tag size bits of card with ribbons and coloured string. Add photos and stickers and you have a unique gift that's had some thought put into it.

There's probably a you tube showing you how to make it from scratch. I'll go have a wee look and see if I can find it.

Are you close? Maybe make a pillow out of one of your old tops and put a picture in a nice frame so she can have something close to her while at boarding school

Look on evilbay, just search photo gifts. You can get mugs, tshirts, phone covers and loads more with a photo of your choice on them. Buying two and keeping one yourself could be a nice touch too

I agree they are she loved it, I also had mini books made for the girls from when we went to v festival in summer. They were £5 and although the size of a pack of cards it was just a silly gift which went down very well.

How about a pamper hamper? Doesn't have to be expensive. Bubble bath/shower gel, her fave mag, lip balms nail polish and files and nail art. Face masks, Hot chocolate marshmallows.

I quite like this idea

Someone made me one a few years ago. They made a box with drawers and painted it and out sparkly bits on it and in the drawers were lots of little bits

Make sure you register to get notifications of rail ticket deals. Return may be £140 full price but if you keep up to date with ticket offers you can find tickets sold for £10 or £15 on some of the main routes, even for long distance routes.

You can buy from groupon photo shoots like Vintage, 50's style, makeover that kind of thing. My friend did one for her sisters birthday, they had a fun afternoon & some great pics too.

Also try liftshare (websearch it), it allows you to advertise and find people doing journies across the country. Usually they'll ask for something towards petrol money but still cheap as chips and company to.

In terms of presents what about making her some candles, buy a kit and find a nice tea cup or themed glass and make it in that.

You can often buy a cross pen and pencil set for £15 in Tkmaxxx/rymans awesome quality looks smart and she'll use it tons in school (i got mine in purple) (also looks like it costs loads).

Finally what about an online subscription - Readly are a online magazine store with 1000's of magazines and you can by a 1 month unlimited access voucher for £9.99 (she unfortunatly doesn't get to keep the mag's but for that month she can read as many as she likes).
