Funeral Gatecrashers

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

In the midst of arranging a funeral my friend has just heard about funeral gatecrashers and the Victoria Coren story on this: http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2008/dec/21/celebrity-victoria-coren

Have you ever experienced a gatecrasher at a funeral... or been one?

We had 5 people turn up to my nana's funeral. we had no clue who they were. Turns out they were at the wrong church and needed to be 2 villages away at the church with the same name

I used to run a pub and we regularly did funerals. I had about ten regulars who would come to EVERY funeral, regardless of whether they knew the deceased. It was their social life

Did they miss the funeral they were supposed to attend?

Was it that they wouldn't let a funeral affect their pub going or some sort of morbid curiosity?

Luckily they had enough time to get there. We had to draw them a map though. My grandad has rubbish memory at the best of times but he no idea who they were and had to go ask.

They'd best not bother for the funeral my friend is organising as we're only getting tea and cake.

you'd have been very welcome, if I still ran a pub!

(let me know when you're near though and I'll bung a batch in the oven anyway)

When one of my school friends died at a fairly young age we all piled into the m'c d's where he used to work after his funeral. About 200 of us and ordered food. Was complete chaos

I should visit for your City of Culture year. Sausage rolls as culture is a thing, isn't it?

An older relative of mine pops down to the crematorium twice a week just to see if he knows who has died

But I think that's pretty cool, and nice to do.

Difficult to manage on the day because you have so many other things going on.But if it was somebody close I'd like to think I could spot an imposter.

Beggars to belief for me why anyone would want to gatecrash a funeral(sadly I can imagine it happening with soaks if it was held in their Local) Free drink for them

Does he stay for the whole day? That would be about 16 funerals a week.

Read the piece I referenced. It's much more sophisticated than that.

Maybe the odd gatecrasher is not such a bad thing, sometimes.

Anyone can attend the service if it's in a church the same as a wedding. It's the wake you have to blag your way into.

somewhere out there

Actually, the Coren story gets better. One of the blokes who blagged his way into the memorial died a few years later. He was part of the same group when they blagged their way into an embassy cocktail party. He choked on some food and died.

Yep. Some funeral crashers do it to hit on the vulnerable female mourners.

I haven't seen it or know anything about it. Isn't a memorial in a church a public event?

They were issuing tickets in order to ensure the family and friends could get in. The crashers applied for the tickets.

I just read the article. That was weird to say the least. Are they just after free food and drinks or what?? I'm puzzled.

We all have to go to one eventually, even if we don't make it to the wake.

There was a lady no one recognised at my friend's grandfather's funeral. When asked how she knew him she was very vague. Eventually said she met him on the bus. He never went on buses. She sat with everyone eating and drinking and chatting. She then got out a plastic container and started filling it with food from the buffet to take home with her. Was odd but it actually made them all laugh so cheered up the ocassion considerably

Taking a container is pushing it a tad.

I'd say that's most uncommon.

Central

My will has plans, with cash set aside, for a great overseas party for mine. No gate crashing allowed, unless the captain of the plane upgrades them all to first class, when he'd be welcome along.
