Please excuse me for my ignorance as a silly American, but can I just ask you Brits what the hell is going on with the weather lately?!? I've been here for almost 2 years now, thought I was used to the variations, but....

It has looked like post-apocalyptic earth for the last few days and I want to know if it will ever end?!? Or mmaybe it's just Leeds?

There are natural thermoclines as you travel from North to south. There's one somewhere around Derby I think. The next one south is between the french coast and paris. You can feel it as you drive south.

Britain has one of the most diverse weather systems though.

The term 4 seasons in one day is very apt sometimes.

As a general rule the further west and north you go the rainier it gets as were predominately affected from the Atlantic ocean, oceans being a fairly stable temperature all year round means, we rarely get hot or cold, however we do get wet.

When the weather occasionally comes from the east, it's alot more predictable although it's also colder/hotter!.

Interestingly there's some very small mild places dotted around the west coast, where the north Atlantic drift occurs (cornwall, Wales Hebrides) when I go out on my surfboard you can feel the water temperature go from about 12 degrees to about 18 degrees... Although that could just be me pissing in my wet suit

Yeah you're talking about microclimates and weather patterns.

I was stating the obvious.

The closer you are to either the north pole or the equator, the colder, or warmer it is.

If you drive from Inverness to Taranto in southern italy non stop as I have you will feel a shift in temperature regardless of the weather that day.

Its why I'd like to move to southern brittany. Perfect weather for me.

Kent probably has the best of weather ... Follow up the east coast to about Norfolk and along the south coast to about Dorset for next best.

Me I like it here in Bristol, it's warm but changeable.

Although I often miss the view of Manchester from a crisp cold Pennines hill

I've driven Europe many times and have felt the effect, driving back to Manchester from Bristol you feel it just south of Birmingham..

Yeah! We have a cottage in Inverness for Christmas then we are journeying back down through Scotland from the 31st through the 4th until we get back to Leeds. We have not quite planned the return journey yet, though!

Hubby worked in New York and the weather there changed from minute to minute (he says), but Leeds is **** with weather

Went into Dales on Monday evening Skipton was great no fog nothing .. nice Autumn night and a nice Bistro

I'm lucky here. We have our own microclimate. Protected by the IOW and the south downs.

Hi (m) here I worked in NY and Boston..

Weather in Boston was at times worse then Leeds fog like a soup.. worst was Battery Park in winter... brrr..freezing fog laughs..

Prefered doing 4 weeks winter military in the Swiss mountains with the avalanches thundering down during the night...then 2 hours Battery Park.. Summer time great place to be
