"The Beetle is also affected. " oh have been trying to see if anything like this came out - didn't see the Beetle mentioned.. I am not surprised their petrol engines weren't tampered with though

"I was expecting it moving to the petrol engines - but it is disgusting that a car that you bought with the intention of paying £140 road tax on will probably now get the tax band of £200+ It's quite a difference annually and that's not even considering re-sale or trade in devaluation." . Petrol engines are a different beast to a modern turbo diesel! There's numerous reasons why it's the diesels but it basically boils down to the diesels ability to produce very high mpg but with a high output of emissions c02 and n0x... So they've fiddled the emissions and sold them as "greener"

"Personally I think there all "at it". If you genuinely want to keep c02 low, there's 3 best options. Buy an electric car and make sure you buy your electric through a green provider! Keep your old car, that's really simple, just keep getting it fixed, or learn ti fix it yourself like I did, it works out much cheaper in the end anyhow and saves monumental c02 on the new one being built! Walk or cycle wherever it's possible, it saves you even more money and will keep you fitter and slimmer in the process!" While electric cars may not produce any co2 whilst driving they still aren't totally co2 free. The electricity to charge them does as does building them. I do think it's ironic that America are causing such a fuss with their claims about "the emissions killing people" given the number of people killed by guns there.

That's why I wrote there's "best options"... However the most recent study by mit university on air pollution concluded that over 200,000 people die prematurely from the effects in the US.... Bearing in mind there's only 12,000 gun deaths, I'd say it was the other way round and that there's far more made of smaller deaths from guns than from the 200,000 deaths from industrial air pollutions

"DO U THINK VW are the only company doing this.....just they caught.we should make all the people with low emission tax pay us all back.....plus I can see another phone call each night....do u own a vw we could claim compo for u" . Absolutely... They've sold an item that doesn't do what they claimed and what's more they've done it fraudulently!. I also think that they should pay back taxs on everybody's road licence

"I've a 2litre Tiguan which also has the affected software. It's leased so the onus is on vw to correct their car. However the government has said there will be no increase in road tax due to the scandal. I'm hoping it gives me leverage for an early exit from the lease agreement!" Unlikely
