Small independent shops and DebitCredit card fees.

Went into a shop and bought £20 worth of groceries and paid on my debit card, when I checked the recipt after noticed a £1 charge for paying with my debit card, is this right? I've heard of a small fee for paying for items under £5! But never been charged before for paying on card above £5.

Never seen that amount before, used to get charged 50p for anything under£5

My old local shop had a £10 limit and below that charged 50p but they had signs saying this at the till. They should say if they have a surcharge, on a sign or words.

Our local 24/7 over the road has a 50p charge on all transactions no matter how much they are, I don't buy much there as they charge over the odds anyway.

Good job there's a cashpoint just 2 mins walk away at the train station

Funny enough I started a thread ages ago. Someone tried to tell me they would have to found my £15 something bill up to £20.

I don't think so sunny Jim especially when nothing was displayed to say anything

I'm all for supporting small independent shops, but not when your being charged for shopping with them. Had I known they charged £1 I wouldn't have shopped with them not out of being tight but out of principal. Think I'll avoid that perticular shop again.

Stop using credit/debit cards and carry some cash, don't have to carry much but enough to pay for some groceries and maybe a cab,,,,,,,,simple really, starting to rely to much on plastic now!

The shop pays for the service they offer you of using your card which is why some will either set a limit (to encourage you to spend more) or just pass the charge on to you ... They should tell you though

To charge any credit or debit card, the law is clear.

The charge has to be in proportion to the bill.

But, most shops, etc charge up to 50p as an admin fee up to a level as decided by themselves. But £1 seems a bit harsh.

Note! In some places such as Hotels and some of the home delivery services of supermarkets etc, they will try to process what is called a Pre Authorisation charge.

This is illegal. Most banks will not process it as a Sale, but a few do and getting it reversed on your bank account can take weeks!

I wouldn't use that shop again plus I'm sure they should have a sign saying they charge you for using your debit card.

Small shops where i live generally won't let you use a debit card if the sale is under £5 .... i tend not to use those shops either.

I rarely carry cash, my choice not to, and i just shop at places that don't charge me for using a debit card.

Like the cash I had in my purse that was taken from my bag in a busy shop last week? My card I cancelled in a few minutes,cash is gone forever.

All your bank details floating about in cyberspace,,,,,,,,very safe! Yes admittedly you can get mugged or what ever but if you carry it safely whats the problem,,,,,,,I'd rather loose a few quid than have my bank account raided! But what ever you choose people be safe and have a good think, peace.

Debit/credit card transactions can be very expensive for the retailer - depending on the service(s) they use.

Not surprised by this.

If they are not displaying a notice to say "transactions under £xx wil attract a fee of £1" - they should !

If they do display - then it's your choice

I have never had money taken from my bank account but i have had cash stolen from me several times ... so i will stick with using a debit card and not carrying cash around
