Right people of fab I need some advice

I am travelling to Wigan by train, I am booking an open return for the same day, I have 1 change at Manchester and I was wondering if when we get Manchester can I leave the station for a few beers and then return at a later time?

It should say on the ticket what time you have to get the train from Manchester. If it don't then I guess you can

Yes just tell the inspector at the barrier you're nipping out x

Sometimes tickets can be off peak only, but it's frustrating when you aren't sure what classifies as off peak!

tickets on BR can be restricted to rail networks or peak train times just depends what type of ticket you have, so many restrictions these days

As long as your ticket is for the correct time when you board again (peak/off peak), there shouldn't be a problem - just walk through the barrier or if it complains flash it under the nose of an employee.

off peak means not in rush hour which I think I'm not absolutely sure is between 4pm and 7pm

If it's an open return, should be fine.

off peak means travelling when it's less busy and each network will impose different restrictions depending the length of journey you are undertaking

I bought a cheap ticket last month and during one change I left the station briefly. On returning at the barrier I was told that technically I should not be allowed to return as I had broken the journey. The next time I did the same thing but asked first at the barrier and was told it would not be a problem. So, ask first.

It is looking like there is no set answer, I will just ask at the station and risk it for a biscuit

the good lands, the bad lands, the any where you may want me lands

Don't you mean a Standard day return, an Open return isn't a day return ticket.

Off peak returns mean that you are restricted to travel on off peak times; certain operators have different rules for defining off-peak, but generally it is trains falling out side of peak hours 16:30 and 19:30 and trains before 09:30 in the morning

Advanced tickets you will be restricted to travel on the train time you have booked.

Sometimes on way to Manc I split my train to go via brum or mk - I would always check your ticket as normally if the train is separate ticket you can leave the station

Central

There's some information on National Rail Enquiries website:

All travel must be completed by 04:29 in the morning after this second day (Handy for a very late, energetic night!)

Break of journey is allowed on the outward portion of Off-Peak tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's validity code and in all cases on the return portion of Off-Peak return tickets.

You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel on Off-Peak tickets unless the ticket restriction for the journey you are making does not allow it. If you intend to start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station, please call 03457 48 49 50 to check if it is available on your specific journey.

Not quite as clear for all tickets

It was not indicated on my ticket at all. It is really not clear. And I have never been able to find a list of "off peak" times which vary from station to station.
