So..your in the local co-op a guy in the queue is obviously d*unk (very obviously) buying two bottles of wine. Outside he gets into his car to drive away his ...what do you do ?

life is full of inconsiderate people ,they are watched every day on CCTV we are all crooks until proven innocent ,maybe the car he drives is the one that drives itself you just turn on and press a button ,maybe he wasn't pissed just had a speech impediment or a mobility issue or maybe we should all just poke our noses in and report everyone for sneezing

Did the right thing by stopping him driving.

Reporting him is good if you didn't want to do this but there is a danger he will kill someone in the meantime if he drives off.

I'd still use crimestoppers to pass his reg, does it once; chances are he will do / does do it regular.

As a side issue, if he was pissed the co-op shouldn't have served him.

Boring me I know but I value the life of others over not being a 'snitch'. As for the poster above, more people need to stick their noses in if it saves lives.

There was a case here in ireland this week where a d*unk driver who drank 10 pints of cider got into his car and crashed into a car killing a 4 yr old, and severely injuring the mother. The judge commended the mother for the viticum impact statement and said time statement should be read out at all drink driving cases. He s due to be sentences this week

The prison better be on Mars cause I de kill slowly

There's no excuse to drink drive - what's a few quid to pay a taxi.

Maybe take his car keys off him next time, or make "citizen arrest" then phone police.

If I seen someone well d*unk, and seen them head to there car I would stand infront of their car and phone police or something.

It was the norm years ago till the breathalyzer came in remember when in our teens the driver drank as much as any one you may sound shocked but thats what it was like. Should be not allowed one drink.

Can honestly say the breathalyzer might have saved my life

I was at a petty not so long ago and unexpectedly got very pissed. Well I had the good sense to take a taxi home. Lucky I did because 5 minutes into the journey there was a police road block looking for drink drivers. They waved the taxi through.

I woke up the following morning feeling chuffed with myself having made such a wise decision. One problem, the taxi's in the garage and I have no idea what to do with it!

I'd just take his registration number and call the police

Any establishment that sells alcohol is by Law obliged to refuse any sale if they think the person is d*unk,or if they think they're buying it for someone under age too. They should NOT have sold it to him in the first place as it is a crime in itself and can carry a personal fine aswell as a premises fine.

Report the shop.

Especially one selling alcohol they also do have a duty of care and can stop a sale from happening for any reason.

I worked in a wine shop and stopped a sale becuase customer came in d*unk from driving.. came to purchase beer, I stopped it. He became argumentative..police called. Job done.

anyone who thinks there is an 'issue' in reporting someone or taking the keys off them when they are clearly pissed should spend some time with the people who have to attend such incidents and deal with the carnage they cause..

Point is that there could be a crash, injury or fatality before the driver is intercepted. I would talk to the driver and try to persuade them not to drive first of all, point out how they could hurt someone and/or themselves and even be in a fatal crash. Point out that going to prison is likely for drink driving. I'd hope that that would dissuade them

No way I'd attempt a citizen's arrest or try to take a d*unk stranger's keys. Call police, it's their job.

So just let a d*unk person drive off then, aye that's a great idea (NOT). I mean once they pull away not only are they a danger to themselves they are a danger to OTHERS.

By time you report the car registration etc the d*unk person could be miles away, or home by time police get to them.

And why not take there car keys off them, what happens if they crash and knock someone over.

If you drive when d*unk you loose perception etc.

Agree with a lot of stuff on here and like others have said, you stop them once they'll probably do it again.

Either call Police or ring crimestoppers to give number plate etc.

The responsible thing would be to stop the person, but it's not always possible for a variety of reasons:

Driver may be aggressive

Person may be too scared to challenge the driver

Lots of people have mobile phones nowadays, if the driver is that d*unk record them staggering to the car (or even driving). Yes, it may cause the driver to become aggressive but it may also cause them to worry about getting caught. If you don't want to be confrontational, consider recording discreetly then tell Police you have footage.

I know of someone who got done based upon a recording on a phone supplied to Police and I think good on that person for giving the Police the footage.

I know lots of people have differing opinions, this is just mine
