"Hope the recovery is swift and as painless as possible." Not sure about that as son met a mate at the hospital who's sister has it, she had been there a month, just weaning her off medication but will need at least a year to recuperate

"Well we finally have the results from the chest xray and the kids dad has swine flu, think he will be in hospital for a very long time but at least they know now what they are treating. Thanks very much for the comments of support Hugs to you all and a Happy New Year " Has he got other respiratory problems which have been exacerbated by the swine flu. My son is recovering from swine flu, he's been very poorly but as he's usually a fit and strapping 21year old then it was just a case of getting through it. Swine flu is a particularly nasty type of flu but usually not any more dangerous than seasonal flu, tends to be more prevalent in younger people. That said, if someone has an underlying health problem ie; asthema, liver problems etc, then it can be quite dangerous. Hope he gets better soon xx

"My 3rd child had it 18 months ago and it took him probably about that long to fully recover - he was prone to picking up lots of bugs after it as his immune system had been knocked so low. Was tired all the time too. Hope he starts on the road to recovery soon, GreyKitten x " We've had no news today so im guessing thats good but will take him a long time to recover, smoking nearly all his life, and using every drug under the sun in his youth, probably doesnt help and thank you

"critical care and intensive care amount to the same. High dependency is when specialist care is needed . some people when they still need specialist care but are not as dependant on life support etc are moved from intensive/critical care to high dependency. if that all makes sense " When he was on the ward he had a face mask strapped to his head; a small tube feeding him oxygen and a pressure tube, along with a heart monitor and a wee tube. I am guessing due to his age, his long term smoking and alcoholism, he has one to one care hence the critical care unit they have put him in, plus swine flu can obviously be passed to visitors, its better for him and them, kids had to double wash their hands and wear a mask

"Glad to see that it's been diagnosed and that he's receiving the care he needs. Hope his recuperation is as quick and trouble-free as it can be. It can't have been nice for you nor your children to have to go through this, especially at this time of year, so have some virtual hugs from me xx" Well you will have the chance to give me a real one in the new year, and thank you, will take him about a year to recover

"Looking forward to it Have the doctors given you any idea of how long he's likely to be in the CCU? Have to say that everything I know about swine flu comes from watching the news or reading the papers, and they're not always the best sources of info." No they havent, its early days yet but the kids are visiting tomorrow so will know more then

"Critical care is usually sedated and evtilated patients who require aggressive therapy and treatment, constant monitoring and interventions. Intensive care is as the name suggests high level care and therapy and contrary to what some may think a lot of the patients are actually conscious on these units. High dependency units are the next level down before a patient finally, and hopefully, makes their way to a general ward. Hope this helps and that he gets well soon xx" Sounds about right as he had to have a nurse sit with him all night before he was transferred there and he has a mask strapped to his head with a pressure tube
