Mod music was dance stuff really including Northern Soul etc, the Who are just associated with Mods anyway as their music was in Quadraphinia

More to do with the Mod image if you look at early pictures of the Who they wore the latest fashions but rebelled with their music which became iconic to the Mods as they were the new rebels and not the Rockers. Just as the Jam became a symbol to the Mods but were actually an indie new wave band who took the Mod image.

the who were an R&B band. the early mods were listening to r&b. therefore the who were associated with the mods. especially with songs like I'm the face and zoot suit. both from 64 but resurrected later by pete for quadrophenia.

The who just evolved into a rock band over the years but their roots are firmly in the southand west london mod scene

was just gonna say the same sort of thing. Not sure if The Who were originally associated with the Mods in the 60s but definately when i was a teenager all the mods in school had The Who badges on their parkas

"Watching Sky Arts...I must admit I'm more a rocker than a mod. so how did The who be related to Mods?? Anyone know?"

It started with their previous incarnation as The High Numbers. Townsend and Daltrey were inspired by the US R&B scene. The Who were subsequently marketed as a mod band in 64 and adopted that ethos to break into the music scene. They evolved over the years into other areas. They still held the R&B side close to their chest and Townsend wrote the lifehouse project which partially evolved into the rock opera quadraphenia which was later made into a film. I think the original mods held faith with them although i think they became a lot more over time. In all a very good band making quality records but they excelled as life performers being possibly the best ever to grace the stage.

Although It seems strange now that The Who were in the Mod camp and not in the rockers camp .Music was such a different scene then .Rockers were all leather and big bikes and were into late 50s american rock and roll .The mods were more black soul and more dance music with there vespers and smart clothes .Out of that lovely soup came The Who and The Yardbirds amoung others .The Beatles and the Stones came from a different field .What a place London must of been then

Years ago, back in the Thatcher era when i was roaming the country in a bus, we sqatted a field in Heathfield sussex.

It turned out the field belonged too Roger Daltry, the police tried to evict us but good old Roger came for a visit and gave us permission to stay for 2 weeks.

Nice bloke is Roger

They are like a lot of bands who started in the 60's and went into the 70's and beyond. Its almost like they are two different bands. But you have to remember the advances in recording technology that was going on over that period which made massive changes to way music sounded in addition to the different directions the bands took.

Like most fans 'Who's Next' is my favorite album but the 1st album is a very close second. 'Its Not True' is possibly my favorite track of all.

I've heard Daltry is a right twat! My mate's brother in law is his dentist and when John Entwistle died he said to him...'I'm sorry to hear about John, Mr Daltry'..(the twat insists on being called MISTER Daltry by minions) and all he replied was...'you should hear our new bass-player!

Now the new bass player was Pino Paladino who is admittedly a genius but how dismissive can you get about one of the greatest rock bass players of all time and more importantly someone who had been a band mate for 30 years!

I am a massive fan of The Who and I get the connections but I won't see them as a mod band! Probably becuase I grew up in a house of Rockers - my dad was a fan of The Who until he seen Quadraphina!

Being a mere sapling, well 27, I came to terms with the fact I'd never see them live but was lucky enough to see them at T in the Park 2006. Out of this world.

Child porn allegations aside - they are GODS!!!

Like many bands they gain a following from a certain youth culture and are then branded. I would say the jam started out as a new wave band but gained a mod following as well as skinheads and punks.

Then in 1980 the Exploited came along and sang a merry little ditty to the tune of jingle bells, called F@@k a Mod.
